I'm just curious how realistic would it be to put a 3sgte motor in a 7th gen celica and possibly make it rwd also? I've found anything is possible with enough money, but what does everyone else think. Is it a waste of time to even think about doing this?

it'll cost you a lot, but it is possible. only been done once as far as i know. it's not really practical. for much less money (and less time and risk), you could turbo your car and upgrade the internals.

If you're looking for straight line performance, the 3S-GTE will most likely be more powerful in the end, but its weight (almost 2x the weight of a 2ZZ) will destroy handling. Plus, you'd have to mod the engine from the start, or your car will actually be slower than a stock GTS (engine weight more than offsets its power difference).

I thought added weight improves handling? Too bad they don't have 3S-GTEs in aluminum like the VVTis. thumbsdown

Damn, and I really wanted to do this mod after a couple hundred thousand miles. cry

Not when it's all up front. The weight distribution would probably be close to 75/25 after the swap (tranny isn't light, either). Good for acceleration because all the weight's up front, but horrible for turning. You'll understeer all over the place. The ideal weight distribution for handling is 50/50, but will hurt all out FWD acceleration (better for RWD, though)

The reason the 3S-GTE can handle so much power is because it's an iron block. Changing it into an aluminum block would just handicap the engine's potential.
