grin I like that answer. Yeah, if the light is on don't push it that's why it's built to turn on for you to re-fuel. But if you're the type who likes to run on E like my buddy who has a civic not good for the car. I try to make it a habit to fill up whenever the car is halfway fuel. Never ran out on my Celica so sorry can't answer your question. But below is some really useful info.

omg that is so bad for the car. It lets dirt and all kinds of settlement get in the fuel pump and the engine. Going below 1/4 tank is a big no no. grin

i have gone 60 miles when it hit the empty signal...but i was doing a lot, and i mean a lot of coasting...

from what i've experienced, you can go around 25 miles when there are no bars left

This is what you do. When the light goes on, immediately go to a gas station and fuel up. B/c our tanks takes around 14 gallons (i think) by looking at how many gallon goes in, calculate how much was already in the gas tank. If it was 2 gallons, then its probally like 50 miles.

im sure its safe to run your car down until the light comes on. im sure the wonderul people at toyota have designed the tank to hold extra past what the indicator shows just so you cant run dry. i run my tank down to the last indicator or none at all all the time. i fuel up asap when no lights are up because i would had to be sitting on the side of the road with 4 ways on. but like on my friends saturn when his tank was on "E" it still had two gallons left in the tank

When the gas light comes on, you usually have around 2 gallons left in your tank. That is often times more than enough gas to get to a gas station from where you are at when the light comes on.

2 gallons is at least 40 miles or so.

well so far since i got my car (a month) i believe i filled up 3 times. ALL 3 times, i put it all the way FULL and ran it until it was Empty. AND i mean EMPTY. RIght now in my garage, it has ZERO bars left and with that i drove about 10-15 miles so i need to find a gas station FAST. im so dead. LOL i never knew it was bad for your car to run slow on gas so next time im gonna fill up fast.

Bottom line...

Refill your tank when you have anywhere from a quarter of a tank to 2 bars left. That should be enough gas to protect the pump.

The only time I run the tank all the way down is when I add fuel additives.

Right in my manual the wonderful people at toyota say not to run the car below 1/4 tank. Right there in black and white.

As for how far you can go... no idea.. wouldn't want to try, my brother's a mechanic and would kick my ass if he saw me doing that. cry

I've gotten well over 60 miles out of it from when that light came on. The most interesting event was at night, driving through the salt flats un Utah. Exit after exit on the interstate that had a big no services sign. Very frustrating driving 15 miles to the next exit to find no gas. I didn't think I'd make it. When I finally made it to a station, I put 14.7 gallons into her. When that light came on, I drove by rpm's not speed, kept it below 2000 the whole time.

thats prolly because they dont want the wonderful people that buy toyotas to get stuck somewhere because they estimated the wrong amount of miles they could drive before filling up or just plain forgeting. filling up at a 1/4 tank is a waste because there is plenty of gas left before you will ruin the pump, but if you like to visit the gas station that much enjoy.

Okay. I own a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS. I am the original owner of it. I bought it brand new. It has over 215,000 miles. I habitually run it until there are three lines and sometimes even when red light goes on. I know from Downey/Bell it is about 13/14 miles to CSULA one way. When I would be at school, I wouldn't want to put gas out there because it was more expensive in the Alhambra area so I'd drive home and hit either Arco spot on Lakewood Blvd. and Florence OR Lakewood and 7th Street (I think) because it only takes premium. I have never run out of gas with my "Silver Bullet." Now, I also own a Crysler 300 and I tried the same thing with less distance (Atlantic Blvd. to just a hair away from Old River School). I ran out of gas a few yards from the Chevron. I had to use my AAA.

So I have never had any major issues with my little "Silver Bullet" except with the clutch and maybe it is because I used to race with it. I have probably gone through 5 clutches of course one wasn't my fault because I took it to a friend's friend, who was supposedly a certified mechanic and he didn't replace the fly wheel and it went out on me a year later but clutch was still under warranty so the shop gave me spanking new one for free. I had to only pay for the service from my regular mechanic. Still, I don't know anyone who has gone through as many clutches as me... :p
