I was wondering if I could make my stock car faster or make it perform better without having to buy anything, aside from maybe tools of course.

You can't just put a spell on it to make it go faster...you have to change/remove things. The only thing I can think of is to remove your butterfly valve next to the air box. Doesn't do a whole lot, but it will give you something until you get a CAI (which I highly recommend...I'll sell you a slightly used AEM one for GTS for $150 tongue). You could remove the exhaust, but dayum that would be loud.

NOOB Questions:
What's a Butterfly valve for, why should I remove it, what's a CAI, why should I buy it from you and what do you mean by change things (replace)?

The butterfly valve is mainly to keep the car quiet at lower RPMs. It opens between 3000-4000 RPM to reduce the restriction it causes.

A CAI is a cold air intake. Replaces the stock airbox, and can gain up to 10whp. The best by far is TPR. It has a ton of innovative features, and is the best performing. If you're on a budget, you can pick up an AEM replica off of eBay for $50 shipped or less, but it still suffers from the bogging and possible check engine light problem that all intakes tend to experience (except TPR).

As for free mods, yank the rear seats, spare tire, and jack, and maybe the rear trunk plastics. The car will feel much lighter and tossable, and will accelerate a bit quicker.

*Slaps Forehead* Duh! Why didn't I think of that? OK, I now remember what CAI means, but what are these innovative features features that the TPR version has, and why is it better performing?

Correct me if I'm wrong here Blue, but the TPR intake has MAFS sensor fins in the piping that creates a more normal air flow and doesn't cause any bogging which are known to happen in most intakes, especially cheap ebay ones. TPR also has fairly good gains on a dyno. It also costs a little less ($180 plus shipping) than most CAIs. The only disadvantage to this is the difficulty in attaining one at the moment. EasyC (TPR owner) is having trouble with the shop that makes them, and the current orders have taken months to receive the intakes. This problem should be solved sometime in the near future, but we'll see how thing goes after the first batch is sent out. Aside from an intake, another investment to look at would be exhaust. These are more pricey ($400ish-$600ish), but provide better gains than the intake. I would have to recommend the TRD sport muffler and the TPR exhaust. TPR has higher dyno gains, but again the same issue with the intakes also applies to the exhausts.
Beside motor and exhaust mods, weight reduction would be the next best performance mod that wouldn't be too hard (remove back seats, remove spare tire and accessories, other unessential things in the car).

^^^ what he said. wink

Besides the MAFS fins, the TPR CAI is made of stainless steel, eliminating the chance of accidentally being bent during shipping and installation (also makes the polished one look much nicer than polished aluminum wink ). It has an adjustable mounting bracket so it will fit perfectly on a GT and GTS. It's also convertable into a short ram intake if you're afraid of the rain (adjustable bracket comes into play here, too). Finally, it uses a brand new style K&N filter that has more filtering surface area than their regular filters, and has a venturi at the bottom to accelerate air into the pipe.

As for gains, the TPR CAI and exhaust work best together. Check out this dyno:

[Linked Image]

Red = TPR CAI + TRD exhaust
Blue = TPR CAI + TPR exhaust

As you can see, there's a significant difference in the gains, even though the difference between TRD and TPR is less when using the exhausts alone. Easy_C is back in contact with the shop he's using now that SEMA is over, so the parts should be getting ready for full production very soon now. TPR has many more unique mods scheduled for the future, as well. cool

I have a better idea:

Get a freaking job, OR, if you already have one and can wait until next month to buy the next installment of Xena, Warrior Princess on DVD then I'd suggest saving that money to buy, like an intake or something. Taking seats and stuff out of a daily driven car to make it faster is like not wearing any boxers because there is less resistance to slow you down rolleyes

As for Blue Bomber, the blue is better than red or what?
