yeah i know this is a celica site, but ever since i heard about the 3sgte swap, i really got into my buddy's mr2. first of all its auto (sad i know) has custom intake and bought some rims for it. he is thinking of getting a used mr2-turbo (with HELLA miles)(stick) and he was gonna give his other mr2 to his lil bro. anyway, i was just wondering, could he just get a non-turbo mr2 and stick an aftermarket turbo in there and it would have the same potential as the mr2-turbo?

MR2 non turbos come with the 5sfe motors which are found in the 6th gen celicas and camrys and a few corrolas. most power youll get from a turbo 5sfe is about 170 HP with out playing with the internals.

No, different engine. He would have to do a 3sgte swap. Should be a very easy conversion though! The people that have tried just putting a turbo on the NA version engine have in most cases blown the shit outta it!

Eventhough the 5S block has 0.2L more than the 3S block, the main problem of turboing a 5SFE is the design of FE head. Unlike the GE (or GTE) head, FE is designed to be economical. Swapping 3SGTE in there will make more sense Also, the 5S has a lot of mileage. But yes, you can turbo the 5SFE using the 3sgte exhaust manifold.
