Neep Help... Car Overheating
Alright guys and gals. Need some help here. Here is what the car is doing:

Will not blow heat even after the car is warm, then all of a sudden it will blow.

Today it spiked at full temp. pull over for 5 min. and went back to normal. Twice.

Now i can't check the rad fluid yet as the car is to hot, but the resivor (sp) is alittle low nothing crazy.

So what do you guys think. IS my thermostat fucked up, or is there something else that is going on given that my fluid is fine???

Also if my T-stat is fucked anyone replace it themselves and if so how big of a pain in the ass is it???

Thanks for any and all help.

Jamey

is your coolant at the right level, jamey? this can be done no matter how hot the car is running.

im sure you already checked on this..but i thought i would harp on the obvious just in case

Does your engine smell like coolant once it heats up? If it does then you probably have a leak somewhere. Hope its not your Water Pump. cry

Coolant Level is fine, All hoses are connected and is not leaking, Heater core is not leaking.

Also Caleb you are correct. my Car is out of warrent, over 60,000 miles and i am somewhat good with cars, therefor the dealer sucks. They don't know what they are doing. When i have to sit there and tell them how to change my broken lift bolt then i will never go back to a dealership.

They only thing i can come to is that my Thermostat is fucked up. I am changing that tonight and will see what happens.

It is the only thing i can come too.

The Waterpump seems to be running fine as when i grap the hoses after running for a while both sides are hot which tell me that it is flowing thru the RAD, thus the pump is running.

It has to be the Stat sticking from time to time and not opening it up.

The only part that is confusing is why do i have heat, then don't have heat and so on, so on.

I am changing the Stat tonight... Hopefully i have the right one as they only list it for a 2000 celica (doesn't even say GTS, GT or 1zz or 2zz) so i am just assuming the both blocks use the same stat. Will let ya know if that fixes my problem

Sounds like you have air in your cooling system. Drive the car with the heat on till it gets to normal temp, then turn it off and unscrew the white plug on the coolant reservoir. This will let out some excess air from the cooling system. Keep doing this till no more air comes out, and remember to check the coolant level, since it will go down when you remove the air.

The question is, have you had anything done to your cooling system lately? This usually happens after the coolant is replaced.

Well i basically just filled the coolant up and did what Blue Bomber stated and it seemed to run fine this morning and i had heat all the way and ran at normal temps. So i am not sure if it was just air in the system or i was really low on fluid but either or it is fixed for now.

Thanks for all the advise thumbsup

Nice catch. Would never think that was the problem.

make sure ur coolant is at the right level...if its a little low, you might have an air pocket in the cooling system...that could be causeing the problem.
