the radiator cap actually applies pressure to the system, and by changing the cap you can fiddle with the pressure of the system.

It's not JUST for looks. spineyes

they do apply more pressure, but with higher pressure comes less heat transfer to the fluid. This will cause the engine to run hotter

yeah...the greddy one i had dosent fit on there cause its non "screwable". It was a type-n cap and i havent been able to find any aftermarket caps that would fit. There is only the resovior cap like that one shone.

EXAMPLE: If there was a radiator cap on the 7th Gen celica, why would the directions for flushing your radiator tell you to fill through the radiator reservoir... when you could simply just refill through where the radiator cap would be - if we had one on our cars wave

hombredelassrtas understands exactly what I'm talking about thumbsup

Yikes, anybody here think of looking at the top of their radiator? Follow the coolant hose from the motor to the radiator, the cap should be just above it on the radator itself.

The radiator cap is like the thermostat, when the coolant gets to a certain temperature, the valve opens, and it lets coolant pass to the overflow tank.

If you have a cooler radiator cap, the coolant will overflow at a lower temp, which is good if you have a cooler therostat installed. as the temp rating on the cap gets higer, your coolant will need to be hotter to overflow.

A coolant purge is required, if coolant get too hot, the pressure goes up and you can crack a cylinder, pop a coolant hose, radiator or heater core, that extra preesure is relieved in such conditions so this won't happen.

If you overheat too much, or your radiator cap is set too cool, you will purge coolant more often, and eventually you will be low on coolant.

You shouldn't just get one because it looks neat, you should actually read the temp ratings on it to see if it will be benificial on your car, or if it will make life more difficult for your cooling system.

Look, if your celica has an overflow tank, then it has a radiator cap; I can't help it if you know nothing about your cooling system, or cooling systems in general.

If you're too lazy to look at the top of your radiator to see the cap, it doesn't make it fictitious. A cap is a required thing, it's not an option, it's what regulates coolant pressure in the cooling system, and it's there to cover the hole for a pressure tester, to check for leaks.

When you drain the coolant to replace it, how do you think you fill the system up again, from the overflow tank? please! it wouldn't happen if the system was bone-dry, you have to fill it from the radiator, then top the system off through the overflow.

The reason they tell you to only add coolant through the overflow is because too many people try to top off through the radiator fill, but they don't wait for the car to cool down first, in other words, too many people either getting blasted with steam, or worse, pegged in the head by a radiator cap and a face-full of boiling anti-freeze. Not everyone should do their own cooling system maintainance I suppose.

Our radiators are mounted low and at an angle, try taking off your plastics, and follow that overflow tube to the filler neck on the radiator, the cap is shaped like charlie brown's head. don't believe me? That's your problem, not mine. I'm just trying to help out would-be do-it yourself types. You can disbelieve in radiator caps if it makes you happy. thumbsup

You gotta be kidding me! I was just feeling around on the radiator, I could've sworn I found a filler neck on mine on the driver's side, just above the overflow tube. It felt like it was hiding under the radiator support (IE, you would need to pull the radiator to get at it)

This would explain raising the overflow tank, to gravity feed the radiator, but how the hell do you regulate overflow? is there a seperate thermostat in the radiator itself? or is there still a cap there doing it under the radiator support?

I'm definitely considering an aftermarket radiator now, the stock radiator (in exploded view) looks pretty weak to me...

Well, the JDM buyers must get better stuff than us for sure, here's the JDM radiator for our cars; Aparently toyota has decided (on U.S. version cars at least) to delete the filler neck and radiatoir cap, which they've done to all their cars, I have learned, since 1999. pretty bogus...

All those caps are for the JDM radiators I guess.

ok so have we declared no radiator cap? From the pics thats what I woudl conclude. I still have nto had time to go out and look for it. A JDM one woudl probably be more efficient, adn then you coudl buy the proformance cap as well wink Great debate btwn rave and isaac smile
