Is it ok to use an universal cat? I need a new one and I've been told not to use a universal.

No. They're specific tto the car based on it's size, weight, engine displacement, etc. Check the Oklahoma laws to see what's considered a legal replacement. They're very strict about that sort of thing in CA, but I don't know what it's like where you live.

You need to find out what is legal in your state. Some states have laws that prohibit the use of any cat but stock, depending on age or mileage of the car. You also need to make sure the cat is OBD II compliant.

BTW, the warranty on emissions system parts is something like 8yr/80k, so unless you're over that, it's supposed to be replaced free under warranty (unless you have a header and the divider plate broke off or something).

A new cat from Toyota will run you in a solid $900, so if you've got a warranty, use it.
