You don't get points for shit like a bad park job or missing plates. You will get points for moving violations, ie speeding. You get six points when you get your license at 16, the number is upped to 8 when you're eighteen.

the point system is different in every state...

I was shocked to find that you could get 3 points against your record for going 20 mph over the speed limit in some areas of PA - and for hitting 30 mph over, they could take your car right then and there eek

in CA - you basically get 1 point and a choice to go to traffic school and have that point removed so it will not reported to your car ins. 2 points if its double the speed limit and no option to take trafic school.

also in CA - you wont know what the fine is until you get a letter in the mail from the local court house... (usually ABOUT $5 per each mile over the speed limit + a bunch of processing and misc taxes ranging from $75 and upward)

but in PA - the officer writes on your ticket what the fine amount is wtf

in California, most everything 1 point is dismiss-able by traffic school - but you can only take traffic school once every 12 months (yeah, shortened from 18 months to twelve cool)

correct me if I'm way wrong - and since I don't live in PA, I'm basically going off of hear/say from others... so shoot me if I'm way off rofl

I was just in court for a traffic ticket(Compton Court House, ghetto style) on the 18th of this month. I requested traffic school. I did traffic school back in Feb. this year. Judge denied me, but he still referenced the 18 month time period. Do you know when this was changed?

The California Vehicle Code (CVC) provides that if you have attended an 8 hour class in the past 12 months (from your violation date), you CAN go back to traffic school for 12 HOURS, at the discretion of a judge (not to be confused with the automatic 18 months non eligibility the court of your last traffic school says it allows).

From...
http://www.reedberry.com/41501A.html

41501. The court may order a continuance of a proceeding against a person, who receives a notice to appear in court for a violation of any statute relating to the safe operation of a vehicle, in consideration for attendance at a licensed school for traffic violators, a licensed driving school, or any other court-approved program of driving instruction, and, after that attendance, the court may dismiss the complaint under the following conditions:

(a) If the offense is alleged to have been committed within 12 months of another offense which was dismissed under this section, the court may order the continuance and, after the attendance, dismiss the complaint. The court may order attendance at a licensed school for traffic violators which offers a program of at least 12 hours of instruction.

(b) If the offense is not alleged to have occurred within 12 months of another offense which was dismissed under this section, the court may order the continuance and, after the attendance, dismiss the complaint if the attendance is at any of the types of schools or programs that the court directed pursuant to Section 42005 at the time of ordering the continuance.

This course will cost more money than the 8 hour class (usually $10 more), and will NOT be MASKED from the insurance company that you attended.

What will appear on your DMV record is, "T/S violation Date"... which means your case was dismissed by traffic school. Can an insurance company raise you because they know you went to traffic school? NOPE. Can a FUTURE insurance company penalize you for knowing this? YEP. But it's still a good idea to go and keep the points off your record towards losing your license.

Here in Jersey as most other states like PA points and fines will be delivered after court for any moving violation. Whether it be 5MPH over the speed limit or reckless driving. Any thing relating to parking tickets, tint, lowered car, etc... might be ticketed, but won't induce the point system here. A fix it ticket, which is rare or never where I live even with a Kazuma exhaust. That kind of fine will never show on your insurance either. I think traffic/defensive driving school for NJ can only be taken every 3 years. I'm not sure on that. Even if you pay a fine and plead guilty to a traffic violation in Jersey that stuff racks up on your insurance points and will never be gone. Maybe after 10 years of clean driving. I'm still paying the price of being stupid years ago and my last violation will never be erased from my records according to my insurance agent. I guess it's better than spending time in jail in other states and called a misdemeanor or even a Felony.
