Don't know if you anything about the complexities of AWD, but was wondering which system you preferred. Please state a reason why

Here are a few more famous sytems:
Subaru
Mitsubishi
VW/Audi
Nissan/Infiniti
Volvo
BMW
Porshce

That's all I can think of for now.

it depends on the car...

lots of AWD cars have a really skewed ratio... basically, 85% of the power will be sent to the rear wheels and 15% to the front...

Not an AWD fan. thumbsdown

Its an advantage at launch & in slippery condition, maybe slighly on some corners, however the drive system adds weight, rotating mass & friction. Not good for sports cars. Good for dirt rally though.

Mid engine RWD will always be the best for sports cars because of weight balancing, cornering & traction when the weight shifts to the back tires.

FWD is however the most practical for slippery conditions and everyday use. Most FWD's can't corner worth a damn, Celi's are the exception to this rule because of fine engineering & excellent weight balancing. There aren't many FWD cars that feel as balanced as a Celi.

RWD's with front engines suck & always will. Traction is so bad it makes them useless for corners or any condition that you need traction. thumbsdown

AWD makes the car too heavy. My friend with a GT +axle back took out his friend's WRX, and another one of my friends took out an Evo MR in his stock GTS. thumbsdown Off the line, AWD is good, especially if you have a lot of power, but up top, the weight and distribution of power to twice as many wheels as normal hurts acceleration a lot.

The problem is that you can only have so much power at the front wheels. On a car like the Corvette, I would much rather have a little less weight on the drive wheels than deal with 400hp torque steer. spineyes

Any mechanics here?? Is Audi's AWD system a FWD biased with slight RWD attached?? That's the impression I get, given their FWD tendencies in the A4.

Subaru's AWD system may be the most advanced outta that group. It's standard, costs less comparitively and is the lightest.

It all depends on what you are planning to use the car for. To understand each system, you need to understand how differential works. I'm sure these sites can explain them better than me.

FYI, AWD system in my car use center viscous coupling LSD. Power splits 50:50 between front and rear in normal condition. Some of alltracs has TORSEN LSD in the rear.

they are nice but I've heard up 35% of the power can be lost in the drive-train

I believe, there is no fixed percent power loss in awd system. What I'm saying is that you might find 25% power loss in 200 hp car (150 awhp), but the number will not be the same for 400 hp car. (not 300 awhp). KTR Performance in MA who specializes in AWD Dyno, estimates 25% loss in many cars they have tested (mostly Porsche, Subaru and Audi AWD cars).
