My G/F and I went to the Saturn dealer yesterday to drive a Redline. She currently owns a base model Ion and was interested in the redline from day one. Well turns out one cought her eye at the show we were at this weekend. So we went to check one out monday to get all the info. She passed it up when buyin her first one cause she really couldnt drive a manual fir shit, but with so pratice shes gotten a lot better. To make a long story short, we both drove it and, for a saturn its a pretty quick car eek Its 0-60 isnt really great, somethin like 6.3? idunnoBut it had a lot of lower end torque. the interior was a lot better then the base shes drivin, Recaro (sp?) seats trimmed in leather, nice throw on the shift, stiff clutch ect. All in all a nice sport compact and something that I'd maybe consider driving in the future. Just thought Id share...

when they relocate the gauge cluster to where it belongs then i'll consider getting behind the wheel of it. Happy shopping thumbsup (Look at an SRT-4 instead cool)

I like the placement of the cluster, after driving her car as much as I have the last month it becomes second nature. Im afraid Ill look to the center on the celi when I get it back rofl I like the style of the Redline a lot better then the SRT-4 too, more angles and not a big soft tit like the SRT

I was amazed, it really handled well. Sus. was nice and stiff and it cornered well too. Once the G/F had her fill I laided into it, only thing I was disipointed with was the wheel hop. But that could be fix'd fir pretty cheep.

i don't know Jbing. I'm only going towards the SRT-4, you're girl might want the redline because it's a more versatile car. Check last months road and track, they compaired SRT-4 vs. the Ion redline.

I know the times are way different, the Ion isnt designed to break records, but for the ppl who want a nice lookin a quick car the Ion may b the wat to go. As for the SRT 4, yea its fast as hell, but... it looks like the dump I just took. Id take a Redline over the SRT based on looks alone

ALL CARS handle well and are stiff and tight when brand new. Take a road test on a Saturn with 50k and report back!! spineyes

if i was you i would have my girl get a celica preferably a gts or if price is a concern a gt but the redline is still an american car and not as reliable as a japanese car i have had all bad experiences with american cars-cavaliers, grand am gt, focus, celica has been perfect-somethin to think about when spendin all that money

respect the gt-s

I owned a Saturn SC2. After replacing the air conditioner for the 6th time (yes, 6th), I was ready to get rid of it. Consumer Reports gives the Ion significantly lower marks than it did the SC2 back then. Last Saturn I'll own. And yeah, what's up with the goofy center-dash instruments? I really doubt it saves that much money when it comes to building cars for right or left-hand drive. Enjoy, I suppose . . .

yea handling is pretty bad. I test drove one at the HID (hot import daze). They were trying to get us to feel the power, i guess. They said that it came with a supercharger and had about 205hp. its a pretty cool car though!

I also know someone who has a 93 saturn something or other with over 230k on the clock...2nd tranny...not too bad for just a saturn...and he beats that thing. Don't get me wrong i kinda HATE saturns along with a few other select american cars...just trying to even up the debate.

Alot of my friends with pontiacs, cavaliers and saturns have a lot of electrical problems too...a/c...wiring problems...headlights would turn off in the middle of the night etc...fuel pumps went...engines shut off every once in a while...but none of the "ricers" thumbsup

So, This is what I'm getting. Forgive me if I leave anything out. 0-60 in 6.3 secs. Not too impressive, yet better than a GTS. I had the AC replaced 6 times, yet that beats replacing a whole engine and transmission. Not including headlights, belt tensioner, moon roof, possible brake problems, "lift bolts", annoying rattles, etc. Take a road test at 50K in a Saturn. Have you taken a road test in a Celica at 20K or less? The suspension turns into mush. Many magazines and owners have commented about this including myself. If you can't feel it then don't drive it. I'm sure it's even cheaper new than a year or two old Celica.
The Celica is on the way out or past the exit already. Just deal with it or get a car that looks good and wants so badly to compete with the new showing of cars.

The G/F's base Ion has close to 60k on the clock and still drives like the day it was purchased thumbsup Its had its minor problems like warp'd rotors and a CEL here and there. Lets not firget, my rod bearings went on the celica at 25k and thats not a minor problem

I used to own a 95 Saturn. I never once had a problem with it--I can't say the same about my Celica. But they don't make Saturns like they used to with all the GM platform sharing. I definately wouldn't trade my Celica for a new redline.

Other problems I had with my Saturn, besides the having six different air conditioners (which, for the money spent, would have paid for an engine or two):

1) Moonroof had to be rebuilt (it rusted out; no drainage like that nice tube thingy the Celica has).

2) Alternator was replaced twice.

3) Belt tensioner replaced twice.

OK the suspension held up pretty good, but then again I did replace the struts at about 70K miles anyway. I kept it up really well, did lots of maintenance, etc, but still had a fair number of problems.

I'm not saying I didn't like the old Saturn; it was still a good car overall. I just wouldn't get another one, based on my experience.
