I just got a TRD exhaust and I want to coat it to protect it from the elements
what grit of sandpaper would you recommend?
I'm using a 250 grit to take off residue and 2000 to smooth it b4 coating it

What are You coating it with?? Heat is a factor here bad idea man. A suggestion for you, Get some steel wool and some chrome polish and just clean it up when it starts looking crappy and besides its stainless steel so its not gonna rust.

Protect it from the elements?
It's stainless steel.
Don't sand it, because you are going to score it up, even with 2000 grit paper.

true, don't sand it you'll get hella nasty swirls and scratches that'll never come out even if you clear coat over it. it's stainless steel so it shouldn't have any problems, but nothing is gonna last forever so it will over many many years eventually show some wear.
