i originally wanted to go with streetprototypes exhaust setup but i couldn't find a shop that would remove the cat so i think im gonna go with this setup. stock headers to the cat then 2.5 inch piping to the 2.5 inch reasonator( this will come from my TSRM) then all 2.5 inch piping straight to the muffler. the catback muffler and the reasonator right before the muffler on the TSRM will be removed. if anyone else has this setup let me know how it sounds( audio or video clip would be great). also, do you guys think ill get that "Popping" noise? the reason im keeping a reasonator right after the cat is to avoid that noise.

so you're going to keep the cat and the resonator, then remove the TSRM muffler but keep the TSRM canister? I had a similar setup like that but I didn't have the resonator.

err i dont have the pictures anymore. I sold my TSRM to a lucky fellow in NY. I'm going to get a universal apexi n1 and get custom piping from the end of the mid-pipe w/a flange for easy removal.

You're not worried about the noise level?

so steven, you had the headers to the cat then completely straight 2.5 inch piping to the tanabe canister? did you get the popping noise that some people get, and did it sound similar to street prototypes video clip? because i really like the sound of his. thanks

it wasn't completely straight piping. The only things i had on my exhaust system were the headers, the cat and the canister in the back. All the rest was piping. yea it was loud and poppy but that's only a side effect of going fast.

actually i found a place to get it done. im basically going w/ the same setup as streetprototype except my reasonator wont be where the cat was it'll be like a foot further south towards the tail end of the car(where the stock one was). ill let you know how it sounds on monday.ill also let you know how i like the mtec lights and aem tru-power pulley, they should be arriving soon.

DUDE! sorry to reply late, but i was wrong regarding the cat, like steven said before, it is the mid pipe i replaced to a resonator, sorry about the confusion, leave the cat converter in place, take the mid pipe out and replace it with a high flow resonator, i will take pics ASAP...

Leave the cat converter in place, replace the mid pipe to a high flow resonator like you see in the picture...

for a while, the only things on my exhaust system were the cat and the can at the end, all the rest was piping. get that setup for optimum performance.

so street, you're saying that the setup in your video clip has the stock cat then after that its is custom 2.5 inch piping all the way back to the muffler with a high flow reasonator where the stock one used to be(right behind the cat)? or, is the entire sysrem custom 2.5 inch piping with a high flow reasonator in place of the cat? i want the setup that will give me performance but no pop noise i think thats the one from your video clip. thanks

it looked like from those pictures he had the cat, then the resonator then the muffler with 2.5" piping.

I dont recommend a resonator for optimum performance.

this is how it goes:

-Catalytic converter in place
-replaced the mid pipe to High Flow Resonator
-Piping 2.5
-Muffler Canister

if you take the mid pipe out, you cannot see through it, i looked for a resonator that looked like the mid pipe but a little bit bigger, this one exactly fits the heatshield, the reason i have to change the setup to this is because of the poping sound which this is what i used to have:

-Catalytic converter
-Straight piping 2.5 all the way to the
-Muffler Cansiter

about the optimum performance, theres not much of a difference between the 2 setup, the resonator serves as a anti pop thing...

i demonstrate the setup through this pics in a min... thumbsup

there is a difference street. if you have a GTS you will be able to notice a difference in lift w/or w/o a resonator. High-flow or not, you will notice a difference without one all together. thumbsup

thanks for the pics street. i'm gonna bring them to the shop tomorrow and get it done. hopefully they'll have a high flow reasonator like that one.

if you can get the close dimensions of the mid pipe its better, diameter and length, remember that you cannot see through the mid pipe, thats why with the stock setup the exhaust is quiet, the high low resonator serves as an anti pop and gives you a nice deep of a tone like my exhaust thumbsup

i got most of the setup done today. i have the muffler then 2.5 inch piping all the way to the resonator( the one behind the cat)... they didn't have a high flow resonator so im getting that done on wednesday. it sounds a lot louder: i originally had the TSRM but now it sounds much much deeper below 3000 rpm, after 3000 rpm it sounds a little high pitched but its ok. the high flow resonator will hopefully fix that. also, i feel a big difference in speed ive only floored it till about 80 so far but it seems like it gets to about 80 mph quicker. the sound of lift is insanely loud. ill let you guys know ho=w the high flow resonator goes on wednesday.

So, with your setup and the resonator totally taken out it would be high pitched and buzzy since it's deep with it on?

it's finally done and it's sooo loud. i feel some gains compared to the regular tanabe but its one of the loudest cars ive ever heard. its a nice deep sound below 3k rpm then from 3k- 5k its extremely loud and after 5k rpm it is insane like you can actually hear it comin from a 1/2 mile away.. i think its a pretty nice sound. so basically that's the results. also if anyone wants to try it i made a custom grill from home depot stuff w/ the gts emblem replacing the old top grill (2001 model stock bumper) i think it looks awesome. ill post pics when i can use my friends camera.

Yea...I was thinking of doing a custom exhaust too. I am thinking of buying a flowmaster muffler with that has a 2.25" inlet and outlet. But where would I get a high flow resonator?

So is it really worth all this trouble to have straight pipes? I mean, our cars are 4 bangers. Is the gain really noticeable? And how much did you each spend on your custom setups? I know this is an old posts, but it crosses my mind quite often. Thanks.

supra_celica - it really depends on where you live and at what prices your local muffler shop will do it for.

doubt it, why dont you call or go down to your local muffler shop and tell them what you want and ask them for a price estimate
