Are intakes bad for your car?

I just got a 2000 celica and I am wanting to put Intake on it. My dad thinks this could possibly mess up the engine. I have told him that getting Intake would be a good thing for my car because of the better gas mileage and the slight increase in power, but I need input from others to show my dad that it is fine.

lets just say yes and no, yes because of hydrolock, but you can avoid that by not driving over puddles of water, no matter how little the puddles look, and there is no other reason y it should mess up ur engine so yeah. wat Intake are you going to get?

Get a shield or cover for your CAI if you're not sure. If you get AEM, don't get the bypass valve!!! Reports shown that pieces break off and get stuck in your engine, which is worse than water. thumbsdown

depending of what kind of Intake system and filtering you use, it has its own advantage and disadvantages. Like Cold Air Intake (CAI) it sucks cold air but the draw back is the inlet where the filter is located mostly at the buttom to avoid the heat from the engine and therefore possible cause of sucking water in it when it rains. Short Ram Intakes sucks air but mostly hot coz it's sitting close to the engine but you don't have to worry about water getting into the pipes.

go with TPR. if its not raining you can use the CAI form and when it is raining you can change it to the Short Ram form.

hydrolocking is the only downside.

and I've heard/read that you wont get the CEL with the TPR Intake.

theonly downside with TPR is that it's not CARB approved, which means that a cop can be a real prick if he wants to.

CAI means more air into the engine, which requires more gasoline, so there might be a slight decrease in gas mileage. However, gas mileage is determine primarily by engine size and driving habits.

everything that you do to boost Performance will put more pressure on your engine. i dont know if its the right choice of words but its along those ideas. but i dont think an Intake would be that bad

I just got my Injen CAI installed a couple weeks ago and im lovin it... but like everyone was has been sayin better gas mileage and increase in power that is true, i drive like a maniac and shift in high RPM's most of the time and have noticed a slight decrease in gas because of how i drive, but with the Injen CAI you start to feel the power in high RPM's. I dont think its bad only if ur cautious with it and try to keepa look out for water... Get a shield and you'll be fine.

Lets play that game called I'll light you on fire and I'll piss on you to put you out

you get better gas mileage because there is better combustion of air/fuel mixture in the chamber.
you get gains because better air flow basically, the engine could breath in more with an aftermarket Intake, and can exhale better with an aftermarket exhaust.
as for the tpr Intake, whoever is out of california shouldnt worry about CARB. as for the residents of california, if you really worried about the CARB number, then buy a used AEM Intake or Injen, take the CARB sticker off of it, and stick it on the TPR Intake. simple as that

no..more cool air=more fuel burn=more hp..u prob. loose gas milage, but not to drastically..hey just get one and have fun with it..sound good, improve gain, like 1-3hp<<varied..can't go wrong bro..heck if you really worry about problem that'll cost, like hydrolock, just get a Short Ram and heatshield..Short Ram will just sit where ur stock air box were, so no water will enter in..no worry, just not as much gain as CAI will give u, but you got an Intake..

I know the reason of this question in the first place and I'm not going to say where this came from. Adam0903 you read too much like myself. No the Intakes aren't bad for your car. They are great for everything. Believe me if I put one in my engine bay everyone should. I'm not one to risk a $6000 new engine on a piece of metal and a filter. It's all good, performs, and sound great. Many people have problems with throwing a Check Engine Light with a new Intake. I have no problems what so ever with anything related to my CAI.
