Ok here's the deal..

my gf's mom has an 03' celica that she has had for almost a year now with less than 8k on it (so still under warranty). during the weekend a CEL came on for her, so i assumed it was the gas tank problem. so i tightened it up and reset the ecu. she went a couple days w/o the light and now its back on. she brought it to toyota and told them about the whole resetting of the ecu, but now they're telling her since we reset the ecu they cant find what the problem is. is this BS?

i don't know. I've heard nothing but random BS stories about yoda dealerships. It could be since you reset the ECU they probably couldn't pull the trouble code from the ECU?

Thats bs The light has already come on a second time; they should be able to download the 2nd trouble code. The 1st one is lost, but the 2nd one is there for all to see.

All CELs are permanently recorded into the ECUs memory. They can check all of the CELs that have ever come up. Bet you didn't know that...

...kinda correct, but not in this case... i have my own OBD-II reader, on the reader there is one option for reading active codes, and one for reading past codes, just because the light isnt on doesnt mean the code isnt still in there... BUT!!! this is only the case when the code is properly cleared with an OBD-II code reader, if it was cleared by removing a battery terminal and putting it back on all codes stored in "long term memory" are LOST...

Yeah, like what Clos said never tell them that you did anything, those dealer guys will always try to blame you to get out of fixing your car on warranty, but if it's not on warranty and you're going to have to pay anywayz then it's probably better to tell them what you have done.

Then the dealership blames you and they can charge you full price because its not covered under warranty. FUCKERS!

IBTL! Go to autozone, get a free check. Toyota will still tell you they need to diagnose it and will charge you IF the problem isn't covered under warranty. If the problem is covered, so is the Diagnostic. Don't let them push you around. YOU are the one having trouble with THEIR product.
