My car still ain't back from being repaired (some shit about having trouble sewing the airbag back into the seat), so I decided to cheer myself up and buy a personalised number plate.

Wow! I can't believe how much everyone's shaking their head at your plate chief!
Maybe it's just that many people don't take all that too seriously here in the UK, the country's going to hell at the moment anyway!! rolleyes
Check this out. One of the most expensive personalised plates I have found for sale in the UK is..

SAT4N 100,000 and that's before VAT and DoT Tax!!

must be feckin mad to pay that much for a damn plate anyway!!

I am just toying with the idea of buying a plate..

K9 RYO for about 400

I have a Japanese Akita dog called Ryo so I thought it was quite fitting smile

Heh, if 666 offends you, how about these numbers wink

JE51 USX 3995

G10 DLY 3995

P5 ALM 11740

AP02 TLE 1695

I have to say, my favourite so far is:

DRA 60N 37000

There are a whole load of VVT registrations going cheap too,
eg R9 VVT 244

I think the most expensive plate was K1 NGS! I'm sure it went for almost 200,000.

K9 RYO is pretty good for 400 though. Looks like its worth a lot more, especially if you close the gap.

I had the 666 GTS plate for 499 including VAT and transfer. I wasn't even looking for a plate, it was just spur of the moment. God knows what it would be worth without the 'X' You could probably add another 10 grand.

Yeah, or if it has a reference to something.

Example F355 GTS = 11,400
F271 GTS = 225

Its a big business over here

Its determined by how much somebody is willing to pay for them. The plates are auctioned off by the DVLA (government basically who issue all number plates). If a plate says something, like K1 NGS or S4 TAN, then for somebody to bid over a 100,000 is not uncommon. They're only worth what people are willing to pay. But if you're loaded and you've got a very expensive car, you're going to want an expensive looking number plate to finish it off. Its sort of like a status symbol too. Everyone in the UK will know what a number plates like S4 TAN will be worth, and if you own it, then people are going to know that you're wealthy and successful.

What if I wanted my plate to read:

D1KK H3DD?

Would that be given away free of charge because of no demand?

Numberplates in the UK generally have to conform to a certain layout. The old style plates are as follows

X123 ABC
^The X letter refers to the year in which the car was registered, followed by a random 3 numbers, a space, then a random 3 letters. This has now just been changed to a new system, as follows

AB01 ABC
^^ The 01 refers to the year in which the car was registered (2001 in this case) the prefix letters are supposed to refer to where the car was registered, followed by a random 3 letters.

So you can now see why it is quite rare to get a plate in the UK that actually looks like it says anything at all, and why some people will pay large amounts of cash for them!!
You can't just pick any old plate, you have to find one that looks similar to what you would like, which is why the more popular ones end up costing a hell of a lot. On the other hand, these "Prestige Plates" costing hundreds of thousands tend to remain up for sale for years, having been priced out of the realms of reality..

Well of course I saw the connection, I didn't ride the short bus to school, I just don't understand why anyone would want it? I manage a Restaurant, KINGS Family Restaurant, so it made me wonder being that I hear "Kings" all the time. But I don't understand why that would be a desirable plate in the UK. I wouldn't want it if you paid me to have it.

If you owned a restaurant in the UK called 'KINGS' then you'd probably sell your left arm to get hold of that number plate.

I saw a Mercedes Smart car covered in opticians advertisements the other day and the number plate was 1 EYE.

Its just a talking point I suppose.

I want a font like this, but a friend of mine had his plate in this font and he got pulled by the cops and fined 200. They say that one in every 10 plates is illegal though, so I could get away with it.
