I have a 2000 Celica GTS. The problem i'm having is when i start the car it take like 2 seconds for the engine to start up. I was wondering what the problem could be? or it's normal on a celica?

Another question I have was how do you test whether ur cluth is bad or not?

Thank,

kevin

As for the engine...

Does this happen when you are low on gas, or all the time?

Have you tested your battery to see if it may need to be charged?

Ever have any problems with your starter?

As for the clutch...

When you shift at high RPM's, when you land in the next gear, do your RPM's drop, or take a while for them to start to rise again? If so, then your clutch may be worn and need to be replaced in the near future.

If your RPMs grab and increase right away, or only drop like 100 RPM or so, then your clutch is fine. Anything more, and it may be worn.

Also, if your clutch is really fried like mine was before I replaced it, once you hit past like 5000 RPM, the clutch will let go and your RPM's will skyrocket without your car going anywhere.

That's when you know your clutch is really bad. Drive under 3000 RPMs until you can get it replaced, and get it replaced immediately!

i think you can ether change ur spark plugs, or the cables and shit, about ur clutch, lucky said wile you drive (drive in a low rpm then shifted to 6, and step on it all the way, if you just hear ur engine spin its going out

Or you can just park on a flat surface, put your e-brake up, and dump the clutch from like 2k RPM - 4k RPM, and if it grabs, then you are fine. IF not, then get it replaced.

But yeah, that is kinda a harsh test, and a road test would be better.

2 secs.? Maybe the sarter? 2 secs. isn't anything for the engine to crank over. It takes me I would guestimate about the same for my 2000 GTS or a sec. Believe me an older car isn't going to start in ".35 secs." like a brand new car. Nothing to worry about there. You would know if your clutch is going also. If it engages normal (not 8 inches off the floor), you don't have to rev the engine from a stop to get your car going, it doesn't slip when you're in say 5th going 45 and have to punch it. I don't race the normal drag crap, but I've beaten on my car probably more severely than most and my clutch is still barely going (81,000). I figure I can go at least till 100,000 miles on it. I'm so confident on this that I'm going to replace my brakes before my clutch. The stock Toyota clutch is rather good if you know how to drive and don't kill it driving like an idiot.

Thank everyone!

Well, I think it happen only when i'm low on gas, but i'm not 100% sure. I'll check it out tomorrow since my gas tank is almost empty.

My starter was replace 2 month ago by a dealer under warranty because I can't get the key out.

Thank guys, I'll check all this tomorrow.

Do you have a cold air Intake? If you do, my celica does the same thing. Ever since I installed my Intake I crank my car and it takes a couple seconds to start. I belive it has to do with the air going into the engine. When I had my stock air Intake system, it will start right away. Since the Intake is about 2" or so air travel more than with the stock Intake. Also check your battery. If its low it does not have the sufficent CCA to turn on the car. Hope this helps.

My 2000 GTS always takes along time to start, too. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one to have this problem.

- Batteries are cheap, replace yours with a 1000 cranking amp battery.
- Have the electrodes replaced in your starter. They are cheap & make a huge difference.
- Put in a set of new plugs, the car always runs better with fresh plugs.
- Dump some injector cleaner into your gas tank
- Change or clean your air filter
- Clean your MAF & reset your ECU
- Add an extra ground wire from your battery negative to the frame & engine block.
- Oil change

Its a fair bit of work, but you can really notice the diffence when its all done. It will breath new life into your car. thumbsup

You don't need a reason to show your car some love. Lotsa people shine the crap out of their cars, but never give the motor a second look. Celi's are nice cars, they are worth a little extra TLC. thumbsup
