Checking your oil midway between oil changes & just before you take it to be changed is a good idea. I wish I'd done that. Now its too late!
I was talking to a friend of mine with an '01 Corolla & he ran dry & his oil light never came on either. Its definately a problem Toyota should address.

After last nights racing & neutral bombing the motor was knocking real heavy. Time for it to go.

This is a problem on older celicas, I know as I just bought a 2001 celica with an Fubar engine ( I knew it was fubar btw!) Toyota will change the block, pistons, rings and oil pickup pipe under warranty, however the car I bought was just out of warranty and the guy had missed a service. Bad luck for him, cheap Celica for me! Fortunately my old man works for Toyota so parts @ trade price, no labour costs and I get a brand new motor When this problem occurs, they burn oil at an unbelieveable rate, so even the most conscientious oil checking will probably miss it.. and by the time the oil light comes on, the damage is usually done. Hope the damn light works better on my motor now!!

Yah, mine did it at 190,000KM & the oil light never did come on. It was burning about 4 quarts of oil in about 3000 miles. Most likely the result of the motor being driven hard.

The Celica I bought still only has 42,000 miles on the clock.. so it can happen any time too!! Update - my engine's going back in the car this week, so maybe I will finally get to take the thing out and spank's ass soon!

Wow, that is some pretty low mileage for it to happen.
