hey everyone...basically my steering wheel shakes like crazy when i reach about 50-60 mph...it started when i put my 18s on...i brought it to get them balanced but the shake was still there...so i bought hub centric rings and re-balanced them...but the shake was still there so now i don't know what to do...the guy at the shop told me that my 2 front tires are probably damaged because i might have hit a pothole...could there be any other reason for the shaking?

you have to get an alignment. its not balancing, thats only for tires.
Alignment let you adjust and place the wheels in right place.
Problem can also be your tires. if you have too much wear on the tires. This usually happens if you have too much camber. You are suppose to change your camber once you get bigger rims. this will make lot of noise and shake.
And smaller tire can make you ride very rough.
if your wheels were damage, get it checked, it will only cost you 10 bucks at the most.

My wheel use to shake like crazy at speeds and over filled in crack pavement (crack lining). I thought it was my tires being old and it was until my endlinks went south. Same crack lining shaky feeling. That's probably not your problem after seeing your profile. It's either a mounting/balancing problem, a suspension mishap, the wheels weren't put on correctly (not tires), or you didn't get an alignment for some time even after the spring install, thus wearing out your tires in spots that coincides to a shaky ride. The bigger the tire doesn't effect camber only toe and camber doesn't effect nearly as much tire wear as toe.

the common problem for wheel shake is bcz of the way it was balanced/aligned. like some say, its really tough to get a perfect alignment. goto someone who has the newest computers to do this. or else it could be the way one of ur tires worn out. if one tire is worn out weird, the wheel shakes.

If you are talking about realigning your tires, it does not cost $1000..

If you just bought your car from dealer. You can get a free alignment service from them usually or pay couple hundred to do it (If it is used car)

But first, you can check your tire pressure, the air pressure might be unbalance and that is why it cause shaking when your speed is over 50mph

I'll bet you $50 that you have a small bend in one of your rims. Take each one off of the car, and inspect the inner and outer lips.

I have the same problem, and an alignment and balancing won't do jack. They are actually supposed to check your rims for bends when they balance your tires, so I bet they didn't even bother to do that.

You need your tires balanced or one of them is damaged.

An alignment won't fix it.

mine did the same even after alignment. I was so mad. They took the tires and put them on a balencer to find out 2 belts were busted in the tires. The machine wanted to hop off the ground. I put cheapos on until i get money to get 4 good ones.

This will do the trick. It is actaully called "road force" balancing. Not every shop does this because teh machine is expensive. In my city of a million people there are only two shops.

"Balancing your tires is the key to you and your vehicles well-being and comfort. It is done to ensure that your tire & rim assembly weighs exactly the same around the contact area of the tire to eliminate vibrations. Road force balancing and then force matching the assembly is the next step. This ensures that that tire and rim (when mounted together) are as "round" as possible. Tires and rims both have high and low spots, If these high spots are in the same place on the assembly they can cause a vibration even if the assembly is perfectly balanced. What we can do to eliminate this problem is measure the "Radial Runout" (up and down) and "lateral runout" (side to side) on both the tire and the rim and match them so that the high spot on the tire lines up with the low spot on the rim."
