Has anyone ever changed the timing chain. I am a very experienced mechanic but I was just wondering how long on average it would take someone with experience to change the chain and guides on a gts. I have never played with my car that much before. I'm guess just a couple of hourse if that. Thanks.

i have not. I heard that the chain was made "Not to be replaced". i don't know, if they had aftermarket cam pulleys for the 2ZZ that would be badass...

the dealer said it should be replace after a while. just like a belt, but of course a lot longer. I have 85k miles on my car right now and the dealer said its about time if i plan on racing the car at all. I've never dealt with a chain before. only belts. thats why i was askin'.

yeah really, i hear on the cars that have a timing chain, then there is no need to change it. But you know if you want to change it. Feel free and lets us know the outcome cause i sure hell would love to know cool

Yah, it should be replaced at ~100,000 miles or so. Its a major operation because you have to remove a lot of stuff bolted to the motor before you can get the plate off. You also have to take the rocker cover off at the same time, good time to do lift bolts. The dealer says you must do the chain, guide & two cam gears which are very expensive parts.

I also have a broken AIC. So I decided to change the motor instead, its cheaper & more effective.

Celicas have inteference heads, if your chain goes the valves slam into the pistons & your motor is done. So not changing it could cost you a motor.

changing it urself is not too easy man. have someone experienced by u, someone whose worked on timing chains, cz belt and chain are not even close. plus if you tighten the chain too much you will basically break ur engine.
