Hey everyone i'm new to this site. Been a honda head for a couple of years now. Trying out a new car. I just recently pusrchased a 97 celica GT convertable with 74000 miles on it. So i believe the car has a 5sfe engine, or same as a camry? I'm going to be using this car for daily driving and weekend 1/4 miles races.
I was looking for Turbo kits but can't seem to find any for this year/model. I did find that a 3s-gte swap would be a good idea. The engine would run about 1500 shipped, but don't know how much everything else would cost and what I need. What kind of transmission, mounts, ecu, etc. everything that is needed for the swap.
My goal is running in the 14's, I believe the 6 gens stock running 16's?

With a 3SGTE and some decent driving you can easily get into 13's. Welcome to the site, and you will learn a lot.

thanks for all the replys. And thanks for the welcomes. What kidns of modifications would I be needing to do to swap the 3s-gte and how much would it run my cost wise. budget $3000. Good enough or save for more?

welcome, you'll learn a lot more as time goes on...we talk about a whole lot of stuff here as far as the celicas go. I know more about the 7th gen than I do the 6th gen, and I know the 3sgte swap is gonna run you a lot more than $3,000.

If you are serious about the swap, I recommend read up on celica.net There are a lot of swap resource there. There are also people who Turboed the 5sfe. BTW, Burien Toyota sell non-intercooled Turbo kit for 5sfe. It's quite expensive though. http://www.poweredbytoyota.com/ssfeturbo.html

Thanks for the helpful info. I'm really looking forward to building up my car as time goes on, and try to learn more. But for now lets just say how much gains can I get with Intake header and exhaust? would that get me too the low 15's? I really doubt it.
About the Turbo, is it safe to Turbo a 75000 mile 5sfe motor or do I have to replace pistons and rods? Looking for about 7-10 PSI daily driving. I'm planning on getting it street tuned at Elite autosports in minneapolis.

Go introduce yourself in the New Members Forum if you haven't already. Its safe to Turbo. You might want to exchange yours for more Performance enhanced ones anyway with lower compression if you're gonna Turbo. Don't have to. I'd stick with 8 psi, thats about the norm. Again, welcome and good luck!
