You will know a ricer when you see one. Usually they take the labels off of the back of the car so you can't tell what they are and put different labels and decals on to make you think its another car. They often put on huge junky looking spoilers and put on unpainted body kits that dont fit. There is a big difference between ricers and non-ricers too. Ricers also put on exhaust tips that don't give any Performance benefits and just add noise. anti-rice.com has some pics.

One example of a car that is definentally nicely done and is not a ricer is TrojanUSMC's car. Just thought i'd point out a non-ricer that does not have poorly done body kit.

gay stickers somewhere on the car (the bigger, the ricier)
fart can exhaust
extra lights that are unecessary
chrome rims with weird design
anything flashy
park bench spoiler
fake badges, or wrongs badging

so basically, if you overdo ur car, ur a ricer.

Who/What Exactly Is a Rice-Boy?
Rice-Boy is a stereotype. The typical Rice-Boy can be identified by his car, or rather what he does to it. Generally, Rice-Boy will start out with a car that was not meant to go fast (typically a Honda Civic), and attempt to "fix it up," usually consisting of aftermarket rims, lowering springs and an aftermarket exhaust system with a large exhaust tip.

Most Rice-Boy cars (or "Rice Rockets") have the usual complement of stickers proudly displaying features that the car might or might not have, most notably, the Honda VTEC sticker from the later model Preludes, and the plaques from the later model Integras.

Rice-Boys do not exclusively drive Japanese cars. There are quite a few fake Mustang '5.0's and Camaro Z28's out there, as well as quite a few strange looking Neons.

Under the Hood of Rice-Boy's Car
Of course, most of the modifications done by Rice-Boy do not actually increase the Performance of his car by any significant amount, but rather, try to give the appearance of high-performance. What most Rice-Boys seem to not know is that many of the things they do to their cars to make them faster actually hurt the Performance.

For example -- I have seen many a Civic with aftermarket rims with the wrong wheel offset, or just plain lowered incorrectly. Sure, the car looks nice, except for the tendancy for the wheels to slant inward, preventing the tire's full contact patch from touching the ground, which results in poorer traction, leading to slower acceleration and poor cornering. This of course defeats the purpose of lowering one's car (to acheive better cornering).

Now, a slight amount of negative camber can aid in cornering, however, the slant I am describing can be 4 degrees or even more, which is an excessive amount, far more than could ever be useful on the street, especially on stock-sized wheels.

Another interesting point about lowering cars: it really needs to be done properly. I ran into a Rice-Boy who drives a White Civic EX Coupe (like how many of these are out there??), who, after replacing his aftermarket "performance" lowring-springs with his stock springs again (he was taking his car into the dealer and didn't want them to know he messed with the car), exclaimed, "Hey you know, my car handles BETTER with the stock springs!". I'm not surprised. I'm sure some Honda engineer spent days working on those springs... why mess with them?

Appearance vs. Performance
What sets apart Rice-Boys from normal Performance enthusiasts is that they are more concerned with the image of speed than they are about actual performace. Few Rice Rockets add the one option that can make a Civic begin to go fast -- a Turbochager.

Take for example, the above pictured Civic. It looks pretty mean and fast with its rims and super-spoiler (another staple of Rice-Boy technology), but closer inspection will reveal that this is a Civic DX. The mirrors and liscence plate frames are FLAT BLACK, whereas LX and EX models are painted and would be shiny. A noble attempt at fooling people (as black plastic would stand out more on a red or white car as opposed to a black car), but the outside appearance doesn't change what is under the hood -- a Civic DX economy car engine.

It's not so much that Rice-Boy is trying to make his car look good. There are lots of people out there who just want to make their car look good, and don't care about speed at all. Rice-Boy, however, says that he is making his modifications to enhance his car's Performance, when really, all he cares about is fitting some sort of image. For example, he may lower his car, saying that it is for a lower center of gravity, and thus, better handling, but if he doesn't do a good job of it (i.e., his car is bouncing around from his shocks being able to handle the higher spring rates... or he cuts his springs making his car uneven) then we know that really, he cares more about looking low then he does about better cornering.

^^^I think Isaac summed it up.

Ricers usually drive Honda Civics, in an attempt to make them look like Skylines. They'll throw V-TEC stickers on older vehicles or sometimes put wrong badges on or stickers for parts they don't have. I've seen a ford pickup truck with a Honda emblem on the grill. wtf

Ricer came from motorcyles, believe it or not. It used to be a competition between american made choppers and japanese import cycles. The imports were referred to as "rice rockets," or later crotch rockets, for the polically inclined. Since the compact sports car rage took off, ricer has been applied to ppl who have gawdy taste with their vehicle modifications. ohboy

so if honda civics try to look like skylines and are ricers, why aren't celicas with lambo door kits trying to look like lambos considered ricers either to you guys? in MY OPINION, big ass rims, extreme body kits, lambo doors, altezza tail lights all give off the hint that the person is a ricer. but to me, the term ricer is more of a mentality than what they have on their car. its the things on the car that reflect their mentality that gives away that a person is a ricer(i.e. things mentioned above)

^^^love the sig line Isaac...its so damn true...and as for my put on rice-boy's...I'm of the opinion that a rice boy is someone who tries to act like a hardass, or drive his car like a racecar when his car is certainly not, and neither is he...the perfect example is this one time I was parked at the movies, and some 16 year old punks pulled up next to me and revved at me while trying to talk shit about my car and blah blah blah...I told them off, and they revved high like they were going to burn out, when a cop car pulls up behind them, and their car starts smoking...BURNT THE CLUTCH OUT on an evo with less than 5,000 miles...they were rice-boys

people seem to be jaded.. especially jyboygenius.

ricers are people who only do stuff to their car so that they may look like they have authentic stuff on their ride; they are also people who refuse to pop their hood while they spout off fake 1/4 times/modifications.

however, people with cars that they are actively working on, and will flat out tell you it runs a 18.9 in the qtr, and tell you if something is a knock off are NOT ricers.

not everyone has a budget as high as some of us, and they shouldn't be penalized for trying to do something nice with their car. i could say, anyone who doesn't drop 10k into their car is rice.. i'd be wrong, but maybe to me ricers are people who are to broke to fix up their cars properly.. which is NOT right.

if yu lie about your car/mods/times that is rice
if you're honest and are working on having a better ride, then you should be considered an equal member of the circle of vehicle enthusiasts

some people i know are going to consider my car rice and actively call me a ricer out of ignorance...
veilside molded on, lambo doors, white konigs.. but hopefully when they hear the kazuma they'll rethink their observations/words

Isaac, cleaning your car is no way rice. Putting a useless spoiler, an excessive body kit, lights and whatnot, then assuming that it's fast...that's rice.

Spiked, if somebody has a car with all those gizmos on it, know they run qtr over 15...that's not rice either. It's just stupid.

If you've got the good lucking stuff, as well as the hardware under the hood...that's a tuner.

jyboygenius, i have all of that shit plus more installed to my Celica - in addition, I joke with most my friends about how pathetic the Celica is and how embarrassed I am to be seen driving it... does that make me rice?

MORE - I always state the fact that the manufacture knows it's slow, thats why they advertised it as "LOOKS fast" rather than "IS fast" tongue

Call me a rice boy... but I never pretend to drive something that it is not wave

i wish i owned a civic - a real man's car rice

Haha my car ain't rice it's jasmine rice!

My turn ("raising hand if I can talk") wave...

What is it with you or your buddies posting 4 yr old pics of my car?!? confused But you've got my attention. I appreciate the effort marketing my car on the web. thumbsup

Anyway my car was damaged in that photoshoot it was keyed and had just gotten out of the shop but had I the opportunity back in the day to get featured with Isaac at the S.D. meeting. (Thanks Isaac! grin thumbsup) He did a great job covering up my dent in the front. And a great shoot on my ride. Notice the front big dent & missing flares? You're pretty direct there kid with your wording. I was one of the only kits back in 2000 that had originated before any other body kit had even gotten out (but you could care less). You don't have to be all anal about it. I hate ignorant people who curse and don't come out proper.

Here's a challenge for you guys whether you are ricers or not. Innovate your own idea's then start posting what a meaning of a ricer is. I can say I am a ricer and damm proud of it who cares! I'm a filipino ricer if you want to be more specific - an american citizen. Does that make you happy?!

I'd like to defend myself now...

Keep on posting pics of my ricey car. It makes me happier to see my car online than not at all. BTW if my kits so fucked up I wonder why i've marketed it so well? You've gotten my attention & I will defend myself no need for apologies there. This is an open forum just watch your wording kid.

Another thing not to be cocky or anything, but I never post pictures of my car since I like to keep a lot of my "ricey" idea's to myself. I help others instead with their problems as much as possible. I keep my braggin to a limit where I will never brag to make other people jealous. But when it comes to people who come straight forward like you, I will come out straight forward backatcha.

My achievements with my car in the past 4 years being dedicated to this scene as much as possible...

Have you ever had a goal in your life? won awards? Achieve anything with your car? been in movies? been in magazines in state & out of country? driven to multiple states for fullfiling these goals and opportunities? You been in commercials, features, photoshoots, set an example to others??? Word of advice come up with a marketing plan or a simple proposal to profit off your ride then we'll talk. Whether you race or show do something to make a difference. Let it be a lesson to you that my f'd up kit has gotten me places. I am happy no one else copies my style. People are only one level above the game when they innovate ideas nobody else have. Have a wonderful day! wink

I suggest a new term to replace "Ricer". Ricer suggests that all cars of a Japanese origin are sad, which we know they aren't.
Come on fellas - we need an ecelica.com designed terminoligy to describe crappy wannabe boy racer type crapmobiles thumbsup
Oh, and here's a cameraphone picture of a hideous daewoo crapmobile I spotted near the local shopping mall. This picture doesn't do justice to the lumpy, uneven, poor fitting bonnet scoop that doesn't even have functional vents. Not that a the engine would ever generate enough heat to warrant them... puke rofl rofl

Reply to Goldcelica - Sorry if I offended you, I'm not making any personal comment about you or what you strive to achieve with your cars or whatever, just saying that that kit, on that car, in that picture is damn ugly. Which it is. If you have managed to market it so well then fair play to you and I'm not having a go at your lifestyle, your ethnicity or anything like that, cos that's not my style, and another reason why I think the term "ricer" is offensive should be ditched forever!! - edit - I am starting a new thread now to find an alternative to "rice"

And I did say "sorry if that is your car"
wink

I love my "Rice Racer"
