According to the October 2004 issue of Import Turner:

"Toyota's Prius hybrid has made its name by giving a family-size car green credentials and decent Performance. But what about a real sportscar endowed with brisk acceleration and half-electric power? One could be on the way from Japan's larger automaker, according to the website www.TheCarConnection.com. [thecarconnection.com.] Toyota is working on a hybrid version of the MR2 Spyder, the website says, for a debut in the next couple of years. Like the Prius and other hybrids, the new sportscar would use a battery pack to augment its four-cylinder gas engine. Toyota is planning to offer hybrid technology on virtually all its cars, starting with the Highlander crossover vehicle this fall and the Lexus RX 400h this year as well."

Interesting huh?

Bringing back the MR-2?

bs

The styling of the MR-2 with the power of a hybrid? Why not just make a new gen MR-2? That was their first mistake.

Toyota has their head so far up their ass that they can't see the light of day.

Hybrid power in a sports car?

Where's the market for that?

They are, but only in their current form.

Nothing says that they can't bring one back as a hybrid, and that's probably not the only thing about the car that is going to change.

A while back, VSGTS14 said that Toyota plans to replace the Celica and MR-S with some new and exciting products. So, maybe this might be it...I dunno.

They were most likely talking about the gay Scions.

The hybrid Highlander SUV will generate 270 HP. I think thats quite a bit more than the current standard Highlander. It will also get about 30 mpg, easily the best mileage of any medium sized SUV. A hybrid MR2 or Celica could easily produce as much HP (and waaaaaaaaay more torque) as the current models, and get, like, 40 mpg. If you're keeping track of where the price of fuel is going, hybrid power suddenly becomes a lot more desirable.

From what I hear, hybrids also have their full power rating from a dead stop because the electrical generators don't need to get up in their powerband like the gas engine does. So, if they wanted to, a hybrid could have a wickedly fast launch, and at the higher RPMs use more of the conventional engine, all while getting the gas mileage of a Camry...hybrid doesn't need to mean slow.
