The invoice is the price dealers pay for the car from the manufacturer.
MSRP is the suggested retail (sticker) price. That's before tax/title/license.
When you go buy a car, the invoice is the most important number to know. The dealer won't tell you what it is usually, so find it online and know your stuff. So long as you pay more than that amount, the dealer is still making money. It lets you know just how low they should be willing to go

so how low do they usually go or how low is it good? is 500$ profit for them is enough? cz i know they make commission. does a special order car be cheaper or more expensive? it should be more expensive cz there bringing it for you and its just wut you want, but it would be cheaper cz its not staying in the lot. btw, good choice of buying the s2000!

BTW, what car are you looking at exactly? On models that aren't moving so well, the dealers often get incentives from the car companies for each vehicle they sell. This means they actually can sell the car FOR invoice and still make some profit. Got both my car and my mom's car by walking in and immediately offering them $500 over whatever invoice price they showed us. Auto GTS with action package for $22,900k.

Heh... thanks for the S2k advice. I took what you had to say into account before I decided If the car is already on their lot, there is a MUCH better chance they'll play ball with you on the price. No dealer wants to go out of his way to make a couple hundred bucks on a special order. Go online and find a dealer with the exact car you want in stock (most car company websites let you locate inventory on new cars).

im thinkin about buying a gts. i can buy a used one for now, but its just hard to find certified. even if i find one used, im worried the previous owners raped it. so if i dont find a gts by xmas, i get myself a new one. you said urs was almost 23K before tax and license? how much did it end up to be after all tax and license interest bs? do you think theyll give it out the door for 23K$ for a gts manual with 12000$ down? which dealership did you buy ur celica from?

I got my Celi from Power Toyota Cerritos.
DO NOT GO THERE.
They took seven hours to run a simple credit check. Plus, they are iffy at best about service and such.
I don't know if you could swing $23k out the door. Tax is 7.75% I believe. So after T/T/L, you're looking at around $2k over the actual purchase price. Just look at the invoice for the car you want on Edmunds.com, then multiply by 1.0775, then add around $500 for T/L. That'd be the lowest you'd ever get it out the door.

If you special order a car from a dealer, they'll also charge you a finders fee, which'll run you up around 500 or so. Depending on the car and the dealer, you can really take 'em down. My friends dad talked a dealer down to 14.5 on a Hyundai Elantra, down from 18 or so, then ended up not buying the car from the guy.
