I have one of those oil sucker devices, where you insert a thin tube into the dip stick hole and suck out the oil.

Does anyone know if this will work on my 1ZZ-FE engine (2004 Celica GT)? It seems that when I insert the dip stick, it bends slightly, and I am afraid of inserting the tube, because it might get stuck...

I would guess, oil suckers are useful for powersteering pumps.

I guess it could be useful if you accidentally put to much oil in.

Like Haulin_A_Doo said "just take the plug out".

Most of the sediments, microscopic metal particles, and sludge tend to settle to the bottom of the oil pan, you want that stuff to be the first out when you pull the oil plug to change the oil.

If you suck the oil out from the top your likely sucking the cleanest top layer of the oil out first which will dilute down and leave all the crap and crud in the bottom of your oil pan to contaminate the new oil you put in, not a good thing.

So the whole idea of using an oil sucker device for oil changes is not such a great idea, huh?

As usual with things that are more convenient, you sacrifice something else, in this case crud at the bottom of the oil pan.

I use the oil sucker because it is easier to use than removing those plastic panels under the car and undoing the drain plug. When I use the oil sucker, I can dress in a tuxedo, remove the dip stick, insert the tube, then go get a sandwitch and an hour later the oil is all sucked out.

You think I am foolish and should just do it the normal way?

Naw, I wouldnt say foolish, inexperienced maybe. It's good to think of new ways of doing things and not be afraid of trying them out, thats how new stuff gets invented.

But dont' forget that often things are done a certain way for good reasons, especially with things that have a long engineering history like cars.

Never do an oil change without doing the filter too. And it would be pretty difficult to get the oil filter out without getting oil on the plastic belly pan.

Power Steering - I don't remember ever seing a drain plug, maybe it would be useful for that.

Quite foolish. You should always change your oil wearing a smoking jacket and a pair of pink bunny slippers. grin

My bunny slippers are getting worn out from all my past oil changes. I use them now only for transmission work.

So I have to get under the car and remove the plastic belly pan--the driver's side belly pan for oil changes, correct?

I have never done that before, so there is that first time fear...fear is always of the unknown. Is it difficult? tongue

Oil suckers are generally used to change tranny oil.

the oil pan plug is located under the passenger side of the car. and you must change the oil filter as well.

or you can try using synthetic oil and not have to worry about an oil change for a while.
