FUCK FUCK FUCK!~

got hte Cover off...

the Intake bolt is seared off ... called the STEALership to see how much it would cost to extract that bolt.. said its 500+ for 7hrs of labor.

and if that seared while engine was running possibly 2500-3k to fix the cylinder head / valves!


HELP this sound right? omfg I cant afford this.

Sounds right, but I'd take it to another mechanic to do it for less.

Dealerships suck.

not sure of the significance but by the price i'm guessing its pretty good.

anyway..how'd that happen?

No idea I have had aclicking sound in my engine since I bought it thought it was normal (1.5years ago)

I jsut decided to replace the lift bolts jsut incase.

when I got in there found the Intake bolt seared off.

Im so upset. If this is gonan cost more then 2k to get fixed I think im just gonna sale it before any problems develope. and this will be my last toyota Im so fucking sick of the service you DONT get from dealerships. Be it simple information or what. seems like they jsut want to fuck you in the ass any way they can.

and i hear you about toyotas..i seriously doubt i'll ever own another one unless they're dealerships make a miraculous turnaround...and plus i'm just losing respect for toyota the company itself..lagging the competition in my OPINION.

Well jsut took it out for a run now it chokes when engaging lift. Have a friend working over at Chevy might jsut trade in my celi and get something else. Im so pissed atm. Will get a few more quotes to get this fixed first tho... aside from other dealerships you think jsut any mechanic shop could do it?

Try making a groove in it by using a hammer & a sharp flat head screw driver. Then tap the outside of the groove with the screw driver & hammer to undo the bolt. It worked for an exhaust manifold stud I did once. Use a magnet to collect any metal fragments.

If the doesn't work, drill into it. Use a reverse thread screw, screw it into the hole & tighten until the remainder of the bolt breaks free.

Next is just drilling it out. Use a bit the right diameter that it almost matches the bolt. Then it will come out in pieces.

You wouldn't hear ticking from a broken lift bolt. Most likely just valve chatter.

As for you drilling it out yourself, DON'T!

You run the risk of damaging the cams, or pretty much anything else. It's a very difficult task, and no offense, but you had trouble getting the valve cover off. I don't mean to be ignorant cause I'm not trying, but even I couldn't drill it out without damaging it, and I can do basic repairs.

No offence taken I would never drill it out. For an update.. I showed the pics to my dad after he got home from work. He was a mechanic and now works in aerospace building Rockets

He thinks he can get it out no problem. going to be drilling it and using a reverse threaded (easy out) to get er' out. I think I may have snapped the bolt when I removed it.. I felt a click I thought was the bolt comming loose.. but hte other "good" bolt didnt do that.

Worse case senerio.. if he fucks it up or cant fix it he has offered to pay the repair costs and let me pay him back very slowly.

Going to have at it tomarrow.. will post an update.

If you look at the TSB posted on this site in the Tech Info section about the lift bolts, there is a step by step guide in that TSB that shows you how to extract the bolt. I believe that it involves tapping out one of the cams and knocking the broken bolt out.

Make sure that the engine is cold and not warm/hot.

I did my swap in a hurry, and didn't wait long enough for the engine to cool down, so I wound up bending the oil feed pipe because the metal was hot making it easier to bend.

You are right about you breaking the bolt.

None of the bolts are broken IN the car, it's torquing the brittle ones that cause them to snap.

As for drilling it out, unless you know what you are doing don't even try. If you touch the threads with the drill, you will be rethreading the head eek

Try something less harzardous, like a magnet, epoxy, something you won't do damage with.

Hero of the day! We got it fixed, I cleaned my MAF and tightend my trottle as my dad worked on removign the Seared bolt, we had to get in and rotate the rocker shaft to get it ligned back up again.. was a bitch but.. final verdict: Thanks Dad!
