ah hell!!!! Some of you may have read in my other thread that over the weekend I all of the sudden got a tranny rattle in 3rd 4th and 5th gears on my 2003 GT. I've got only 26,000 miles on it, so I took it to the dealer just like everyone said. I just got the phone call from the dealer and he's gonna give it back to me for the weekend, and I'm dropping it off to them on Monday for major surgery...THEY ARE REBUILDING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION!!!!! I asked if he could just put a new one in, and he said NO!!!!!! I was like WTF!!!! confused confused He's offered to put a TRD clutch and Flywheel in, but sadly I don't have the money cry...its all under warranty tho thumbsup thumbsup They said that they are even going to have me a loaner lined up, which is nice. Its nice to see a dealer actually keeping up with the warranty on our cars. thumbsup Only one question...do I go ahead and shell out the $300 for a new clutch (which will put me in a huge pinch, or just keep my stock one, since its not slipping or having hiccups. I'll probably jsut go ahead and do it (DAMN I wish I had the money for a lightened flywheel right now) because I'm afraid that if I don't it'll make things worse. Also, why are they wanting to re-build it, rather than putting a new one in????? confused confused I've only had problems with re-built tranny's in the past...I'm a little frightened at this, being that they are keeping up with the warranty, but not just saving the time and replacing the whole thing instead of re-building ?? confused

I'm also wondering if they are going to fuck with my AEM CAI when they take it off and put it back in...you have to plug the hose to the butterfly valve, and blah blah blah...good thing they aren't ripping the block apart...they'd find my higher comp. internals...I'm still worried as hell tho

bring c00kies...everyone likes 'em and if I was about to work on a car and they brought me some c00kies I'd sure as hell do a good job on it. people don't think I'm serious but let's break it down

Average Toyota service tech (X) = unhappy with life

X + c00kies > X in levels of general life satisfaction

if you're still worried about your Intake, throw some chocolate chips into the batch, or just speak to the service manager personally when you drop the car off...good luck thumbsup

it should be guaranteed under warrantied work, dunno about georgia's lemon laws, but keep track of your warrantied paperwork. if the problem was initially presented under the warrantied period, then they have four times to get it right, even if it's continuing after the warranty. just get in touch with your state's consumer protection agency and get all the information you need on the lemon law, b/c unfortunately sometimes that's where this sort of thing leads. thumbsup

...god I really really want to, but I think the problem is something with the clutch assembly...I just got it back to drive for the weekend (they said it would be alright)...and yes they are going to guarantee the work. On the way back from picking it up this morning the rattle was still there, and the clutch pedal started to squeak when it was being pushed in...but its not slipping at all when I driveconfused confused...the service manager said it might be a bad throwout bearing...and to just drop it off on monday and they are going to completely tear the thing down...aside from the clutch, I really wish I had the $400 for the fidanza flywheel...guess I'll find out next week...and the worst part of it all is that I'll probably have to miss the FUCKING southeast meet some of us celi owners are putting together on the 7th, so far there are like 12 of us...and more keep signing up...I've been looking forward to it for like 3 months and now this crap...ARRGGHHH!!!! cry cry

Toyotoa is so stupid...

Do they know what's involved with repairing a transmission?

It's cheaper to just replace it. If I were you, and there are other dealers around, get more opinions.

Not all dealers have techs who can repair transmissions, so they just replace them.

Actually, they are the most repuatable service department around for toyota dealers, and one of the service techs has an 02 carbon blue GT with the fidanza/act combo...I'm just worried about them not knowing how to reconnect the CAI, and also, once they tear down the tranny, and re-build it, my car will probably never run the same...too many little parts to be put in perfect on the tranny...I'm praying that they'll just take it off the engine, and find that part of the clutch assmebly, or the flywheel is messed up, or the shift linkage is fucked and rattling or something like that...I'm really really nervous about them taking apart the gearing, and the bellhousing, and all that stuff... cry cry cry cry cry cry cry cry cry cry cry cry

I've got a very similar story about my 03 GT that was bought in Savannah GA! I'm in Germany now, and 2 months ago I was getting serious grinding in my upper gears, one day the tranny just gave up on me and wouldn't let me drive over 15MPH. When I took it to the dealership here, they weren't allowed to work on American spec tranny's so they HAD to order me a new one. I wonder if there was a batch of bad 03 GT tranny's in the SE region???

...possibly...I wonder if I wrote toyota, and asked about how many 03 GT 5 speeds they had brought in for warranty work, would they tell me...I wonder if there are enough that they might write up some kind of TSB or something????

I had my transmission rebuild too... at ~50 000Km and 10 000Km after the rebuild the rattle returned... But i keep driving like that until now i'm at 97 000Km i'll ask to change the tranny cause i don,t want it to rattle again after the rebuild! The warranty will be out!

yeah, I called toyota, and they said that if I'm not satisfied to call them and they will have the dealer just install a new one...they also said that they would check how many are being brought in on rebuilds because they have gotten a lot of calls about this...they said that they might just have to figure it out and issue a TSB...wouldn't that be nice

I think they bolt up exactly the same. I know of one person that bolted a 2ZZ to their 1ZZ 5 speed.

nah...I've already asked about the 2zz tranny...we had a huge thread on the subject, and it doesn't fit...and yeah, the service tech thought it was the throwout bearing...which is what I'm hoping, so thaey don't have to re-build the entire thing...and I'll only be out of my car for two days
