Celica Forums General Discussion General Doing 1st Oil Change, Need a Little Help

I've got a new '04 GTS, and I'm going to change oil for the 1st time. Underneath the car, I notice the black plastic shields covering everything under the engine. Can I pop them off and back on safely, or how do I get them out of the way?

sup bro, yeah its a sinch, btw i just did my oil not too long ago. All you gotta do is pop off a few clips and uncrew a couple of screws off to get to your oil pan and the oil filter. Its on the passenger side of the car. YOu dont know need to take off the Driver side plastic covering. Its that easy. Drain the sucker and clean it up any uneccessary oil. Dont forget also when changing your oil filter make sure you get line of the RING of the new oil filter with some of your old motor oil onto it. This creates a sealant for the Oil Filter so you wont have future leaks from your oil filter. Once thats done, screw that puppy on your car,put the plastic covering back on and fill'er up with some Mobile 1 synthetic 5w-30 oil! And shes done! Make sure and use about 4.5 quarts! Cause that how much the GTS takes! Have fun!

write down your mileage, date, what oil fitler used, 4.5 quarts of mobil 1 because i don't think that toyota covers cars when you do your oil changes by yourself. not sure on that but i would write down any info. and that give you some proof that you did it.

just like what was said.. pop the clips off and take the screws off. its easy and yeah you will be able to put them back on.

Hey thanks, yeah I've always done my own oil changes, and use Mobil-1. I'd be really pissed to find out Toyota expected me to bring it in every time I wanted to change the oil. I'll definitely keep a record.

Can you use 10w-30 oil for a GTS ?

yeah it wouldnt hurt, but theres also no point. 5w30 works just fine.

do not put synthetic yet. its better for ur engine to run with regular oil for about 10,000 miles, and then you can switch it to synthetic.
also when you take the filter off, make the the black seal comes out with the filter and doesnt stay on the place where the new filter goes. this barely happens, but remember. we had this once happen, and once we turned on the car, the oil leaked off the filter between the two seals. you dont wanna ruin ur brand new engine
