ok so i was at the gas station today filling up my tank. for some retard reason, (and im just assuming its the gas pumps fault b/c this is the first time this has ever happened to me) the gas spilled over, and the pump didnt automatically turn off after my tank was full. i have the action package on my celi and it spilled on the bottom sideskirt.

so i get home and realize that the part on my sideskirt that got gas spilled on it is all dull looking. now i cant tell if this is just b/c of the oil in gas or if for some reason the gas ate away at my clear coat.

ok so i have 2 questions.

1) do you think there is anything wrong with my gas tank (not shutting off when full) or was the solely the pumps fault?

2) is it possible for gas to eat away at the clear coat, and if so would i be able to complain to toyota and get them to replace it?

i am going to try washing my car just to see if infact it is just residue from the gas that is stuck on my car.

thanks!

Did you get the recall done!! Most of all toyota Celi's for that year, got recalled, since the Tank has a prob with the stopper, its not fitted right or smoething, and it falls into the tank, and then theres nothing to help trigger the nozzle to stop pumping, so it comes out. Toyota sent me a recall notice and i got it fixed!!

hey that happend to me once as well, but the stupid ass pump at the gas station popped out when it was done filling up. When it popped out it hit the side of my car angry pos got me mad, but i buffed it out and you cant tell. but now there is a lil lil dent but hardly noticeable. Only if you look at realllllly closely.

well this is the first time it has happened, and i never got a recall notice for my car, i got it in july of 2003, maybe by then it was fixed? i dunno. if it happens next time i get gas, i will most definately take it into toyota.

anyways, i think i figured out it is just the wax on the car at the bottom that got messed up. its time for a new wax job anyways, so i'll do that this weekend.

EDIT: i just looked up info on that recall, and they sent the recall out in february of 2003, which was a while before i purchased my car, BUT, like i said, next time i get gas im going to a different gas station, and if it happens yet again, im taking it into toyota.

Thanks!! thumbsup

could be few reasons.
1- did you have ur tank on the side of the pump or did the pump barely reach the gas tank?
2- was gas pouring out ur gas tank and the pump didnt stop?
3- where you running pretty empty before pumping?
4- did the pump shut off by itself before a few times while pumping?
5- did you insert the nozzle in the tank properly?

this is wut i think could be wrong. these pumps have a switch in the nozzle that will stop gas when it needs to. it will function improperly if you dont insert the nozzle properly in the gas tank, like maybe not shove it in completely or barely reaching it to ur pump. the most common problem is that the pump is probably messed up. i work at a station and it happens sometimes and you cant really blame the owner of the station. sometimes ppl drive off with the pump and dont tell the station, when they do that, the part inside the nozzle that shuts the gas flow breaks, which will do wut it did to u. following customers of the same pump will overfill their car and the pump will not stop. or else another way to break that shutter is by excessive pump abuse. when pumping done, ppl have the habit to shake the nozzle on the tip of the tank to stop the dripping of the pump. hitting it around too much will basically break the part. but the problem is that this doesnt happen to everyone. for example, it started spilling off ur tank cz the pump didnt stop by itself, the next person who will pump on the same pump will most probably not have any problems.
conclusion: dont worry, nothing is wrong with ur car. gas station is not trying to piss you off, inform them so they can fix it. always stay on the pump while ur car is pumping. dont use cell phone by the pump or sit in ur car and get back out and put the pump down when ur done.

Toyota doesn't always get the info out to everyone, but in this case they should have.

The check valve falls into the gas tank, and causes the gas pump to not shut off.

This could create a fire/exlosion hazard, so be careful when pumping next time.

The same thing happend to me yesterday. When I 1st got the car I remembered ther was a metal door thing in the hole where you put the gas nozzle in. After a few more pumps it was gone. I wonder if that has to do anything with it.

I had the recall on my car. When the gas would spill I would just go home and hose down the area with water and everything was fine. My car is black as well.

a good idea if ur gas spills is just grab a paper towel for the window cleaning stuff.. and clean it up off ur car while you are still there and the gas is still "fresh" that way it doesnt have a chance to damage your paint. thumbsup

seems like a lot of us had this problem - I found it very annoying but at least Toyota took care of it with the recall...

YIKES...DEFINITELY do NOT do that, unless you wanna scratch the SHIT outta your paint! That is why papertowels are meant for glass, not car paint
