Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Engine Bay Cleaning

Ok people i need some insight on what i should cover as far as cleaning the engine goes, I have a 2000 GTS. I was bored today and i decided to take off the plastic coverings from my motor. Anyways, i took off the left plastic covering that covers the motor and i discovered that its a bit dirty on this side of the motor and would like to clean ^__^ I know your suppose to cover anything electrical and stuff. But I am unsure of the spark plugs that are on top. I noticed that where the spark plugs are there are what it looks like it could be are wires that are connected to the spark plugs. There covered with pieces of black tape i presume. Anyways my question is would I want to cover those top of the spark plugs as well? And any other specific things i should cover before i spray my engine with the engine cleaner and hose that beeeyaatch off eh? i just need some opinions and some answers and tips if any! I appreciate your help my fellow e.celica members/fans!

I'd cover the alternator and ECU for sure. As for the plug wires, you should be fine as long as the wires are in good condition.

On another note, a few mechanics have told me that cleaning your engine bay is not always good, especially on an older car. It can damage seals, hoses, and any oil that is exposed could be plugging a leak. Just what I heard.

^^ the ECU is already covered quite well (as long as you didnt unscrew the plastic part that says "do not open"


and really other than that almost everything is fair game. just check to make sure the spring on the airbox is holding the cover over the airbox so excess water can't get in.

lately, all i've been using is simple green + a rag or sponge but every now and then i'll hose the whole thing down...haven't noticed anything bad or rust anywhere

yeah the stuff i will use is GUNK engine degreaser/cleaner! Stuff works great man! Me and my dad have been using it on our cars for a while! ^__^
