I mis-shifted and screwed up my engine. Toyota is paying to get my engine fixed. However, the guy that appraised the damage discovered that my harmonic balancer is welded to my crankshaft. So the warranty did not want to pay for it. So I called and called till they agreed to do the repairs. However they say,"Your harmonic balancer and crankshaft are welded together.""They had to be welded physically with a torch." I told em that I had nothing to do with it so toyota warranty is assuming that the toyota dealer sold it to me that way. "We will fix whatever damage is done to the motor, But we aint fixin the balancer or crankshaft." I spoke with the dealership and they keep sayin that the balancer and crankshaft got welded when I blew my engine. Is this even possible? And after the warranty manager researched the pictures, he is positive that someone welded it, it didnt just happen! WTF who is right or wrong here? And if they sold it to me like that, why should I have to pay for it? How can I tell if they sold it to me that way?

The answer I seek is whether or not the crankshaft was welded. Or did it happen on its own. Because if it happened on its own warranty should fix it. But warranty guy said that it was done by hand and torch so if I bought it like that, my dealer has to fix it. And dealer insists that it happened on its own. Its just a loop. However if I bought it that way and it was still under warranty + I bought the extended warranty, they broke the lemon law because having the crankshaft and harmonic balancer welded together completely voids both my warranties. Need advice because I am seeing the dealers management tommorrow.

fight it, if you didnt do it, and no one just snuck into ur garage to weld, lol... tell em ur not leaving untill thye fix it, and if they refuse call up consumer reports, and a local television station and inform them of a "consumer fraud" case, this usually gets the attention of bussines when you threaten them with these ^^

why would someone want it welded? Is there some advantage to that? Did you buy it used? If not then it HAD to be the dealership. I would mention that you took this issue to a Celica website too and it could give 10,000 toyota owners a very negative feeling towards their company. And oh yeah, most of the patrons of this site are younger car owners who will be buying lotsa vehicles in their future. thumbsup

If you bought the car used, you would have no idea what was done. It's not like you buy a used car and then tear the engine apart to make sure everything is ok. (I know nothing about engines, so if the harmonic balancer is outside the engine, forgive my ignorance)

I think that the dealer is trying to cover up the fact that they sold the car with it already welded. Then sell me an extended warranty. Does anyone know if it is possible for the welding to happen by itself, when I blew my motor? If not, they sold me the car that way. Therefore the dealer only has 2 options, buy the car from me, or fix it! Cuz they sold me a Lemon.

it seems like he bought a certified vehicle. if it is certified, they are basically promising you to sell a reliable car, so if any weld bs was up when it was sold, dealer should be responsible for it.

I'd say to just fight it-keep telling them you had no idea about this. the fact is, you bought it used(if it still has a warranty, then the dealer had to look it over to make sure he could put a warranty on it. If there is anything on the car that might void the warranty, then they can't certify it). When you bought it, it had a warranty in which if something happened to it, they are responsible (as long as they have records of you having regular scheduled maintenence on the celica). Good luck, and don't let them screw you over.

When you let the clutch out too quick before you put it in the next gear & apply the accelerator. The engine revs into the red with no resistance & can cause the engine to fail. This should be prevented by the rev limiter.

Misshifting can also refer to shifting to the wrong gear when racing (for example, shifting from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th). The rev limiter is useless if you do that - you can rev over 10k, especially if you shifted at the redline. Major engine damage - usually your lucky if it can get you back home.

My understanding is that the balance shaft is separate from the crank shaft, and it is 180 degrees out of phase with the crankshaft to cancel out engine vibration. I don't think the engine would operate if they could be welded together. I would think that blowing an engine would result in a lot of smashed and bent parts, rather than welded. Good luck!

So you are saying that it is possible for it to weld together by itself? If it would not operate while welded together, then it welded it self together, right? I only want to know if it is possible for the harmonic balancer to weld itself to the crankshaft. If not, Ihad to have bought it that way. Remember, the warranty did 2 days worth of research on the crankshaft. So was it caused by a mis-shift or what?
