I have a 2001 GT, I bought it used and the dealer told me I had ABS. However, recently I managed to lock my front wheels at 25mph, skidded about 10 feet.

My question is, do all Celicas have ABS? (it seems like it, but i've heard it was an option). How hard is it to defeat the ABS on the car (make the wheels lock despite ABS)?

When you turn the car on, the ABS indicator on the dash should light up.

If it does, you have ABS.

when I first bought my celi I had a gt, told me it had ABS and didn't, the dealer that sold it to me had left (im talking a month later) demanded a trade in for a misrespresented vehicle and bought the GTS. They tried to fuck me on the trade in, but threatening to get the DA involved stomped that pretty quick.

he means can it be rendered useless to the point where the wheels lock up even with ABS braking systems working...

given the speed and force of application I'd say yes...I've done it in a 2002 Buick Century w/ ABS...took my Pop's car for detailing and tried to avoid hitting a large dog...screeeech...then pulsing...then safe dog grin

my GT does not have it...wouldn't want it either...just another thing to add to a list of complicated things that can break tongue

me and a crazy frd of mine tested the abs system on a 97 cr-v ... benefits and obvious and everyone have heard, draw back is tat it locks the wheel and aviod turnin THEREFORE, i'd say, in some cases it's WORSE to have abs ... you BREAK hard ... abs ... crash STRAIGHT to tat thing (watever ur hittin) ... he played with off road drift so he just took the abs fuse out thumbsup

ABS does NOT lock the wheels and prevent you from turning. rolleyes

If you knew what ABS was, you'd know that it allows you to drive WHILE skidding. If you activate the ABS on ice/loose gravel/rain, you have to know how to use it properly.

You press the pedal down FIRMLY and leave it down, while controling the car during skidding.

ABS, when used properly, is 10000x better than non-ABS. When used wrong, it causes harm. Sadly, 99.9% of people pump the brake, don't steer, etc. and it causes the ABS to not do it's job really.

then thats some retarded abs every car i ever had that had abs (2000 s-10, 1995 jetta vr6, celica) helped more then hurt thoguh i did lock them in the celica once but i was off the brakes before i gave abs time

the hole purpose of the abs is to help you turn which kinda goes agasnt what you say some times the wheel will jerk and if your not holding on to it good it will leave your hand but every time my abs came on snow and all it has helped me i wish i had it in my old dodge brakes locked in snow couldn't turn and bam a pole

beat me to it lol

i remember on tv there was a tv show "behind closed doors" with some stupid blonde as the host and they were at chevys testing grounds and the guy showed her the diffrence between a abs car and no abs

the setup
a road that on one side is soaked in water other side dry gonig 25 mph with one side in the water one side not and NO abs she slams the brakes and almost instantly spins does like 5 spins finaly coming to a stop about 150 feet later

then with abs same speed and all she slamed them car jerked a lil but she stoppped in like 50 feet controled

When they told you about the ABS, you should have told them to show it to you. It shows up in your dash display when you turn on the engine,... thumbsup

unless you paid for that option on your celica and it turns out it doesnt have it, you better complain.
like what floydianslip6 said, its a misinterpretation of the vehicle.

Well, I remember the guy telling me it did, but my parents don't remember too well, though they tell me they wouldn't have bought it if it didn't come with ABS. Bottom line: I got the car dirt cheap compared to what it was worth, so I don't feel too cheated...my mom however is thinking of ditching the car. frown

Well, my parents don't know much more about cars other than turning them off and on, and I was a bit of a noob back then, so I didn't bother checking. There were lots of other things that I noticed about my car afterwards, because I was a little excited at the lot. it doesn't bother me too much, especially on open freeway ramps laughsilly
