Hello,

I just wanted to get better at driving my stick shift. I am fine at shifting while going because like everyone says, that is the easy part. The hardest part IMO is starting of from a dead stop N to 1 which also includes small incline, hills, and etc. I wanted to know how you guys perform this feat. and my goal is to learn something new.

Please post a detailed description on this.

I am sure that me and noobs in this area will appreciate this thread.

Thank you,
Alex

I know what you mean, but I was more in the line of the right steps of actually starting off.

Something in the line of:

Clutch in
Brake
Stop
Shift to 1
Clutch out slowly
Give it some gas
Clutch out fully
Gas

Is that right?

you should start learning with the ebrake on, shift to 1st and start your gas/clutch. Start doing that until you find the "holding point" where the car starts to move but is held by the brake, learn how much gas/clutch it takes to get to this point and you will be 300% smoother at starting off

find a steady up hill with no one behind you preferably an empty parking lot and let the car roll back. when the car begins to roll back with out using the gas pedal let the clutch out slowly but not fully. you will feel the clutch engage and start to slow the car down. realse the clutch some more and now you will be stopped on a up hill with out using the gas or break. now add a little gas and the car will start to roll forward. this technique is good for uphill stops.

its a lot easier to do it then to describe it.

Sounds good. I will do that more often.

Also, if I was to just be stopped at a stop sign. I got my right foot on the brake and the left holding down the clutch. When it is my turn to go, is it good for me to do the following:

Right foot still on brake
Left foot slightly goes up to find the friction point
Right foot goes to gas and tap it a bit
Balance the two
Go

yup thats what i usually do but it takes practice or if your at a 4 way stop and the road is even just use the brake to stop completly and take your foor off the brake the car wont roll forward so that way your ready to go.

one good beginner fhing is to :
put the clutch the hole way in
set it in first
let the clutch go very slowly when you are about half way out you notice the car starts to move slowly forwareds then you add a litte gas and you are rolling...

and then you can try pushing the gas a litle before the clutch is half way just a little in and then fine tune it from there...

With the hill thing, if you new new at learning clutch I wouldnt recommend that too much, try launching on hills too long for your first stuff and you'll be smelling that good ol burning clutch...or burnout from tires

Advanced would be learning to shift without a clutch. Its a little tricky but it really teachs you how to match your gears. Its slow at first & then it gets quicker if you do it everyday. Not to mention it saves your clutch.

OO...well not that advanced then, lol.

Question, what is the average life span before one replaced the clutch? In miles.

first throw it in neutral, then break at the stop, light turns then put clutch in sift to first evenly give gas as you release clutch, you should feel it...

lol, i'm learning to drive my bf's 6-spd celi and i had a hard time starting too.

make sure you give it enough gas, because if you don't...you'll kill...and don't hesitate, because you'll roll back in you're on any incline whatsoever. Just keep practicing...and you'll get it! thumbsup

I am wondering, if say I am releasing the clutch right, say that I am about half way, then I rev to about 2-3K RPM and then I release clutch up till the friction point, does that damage anything?

friction point=cars moving a bit forward=rpms drop=car idles rougher=going more than 1mph,= D without pressing anything on automatic

if there are ppl in front of u, then the smartest thing to do is not use the brake. since its downhill, get the clutch out to friction point and gas it a little so the car moves a little, when moved a little and wanna stop, push the clutch all the way in, when you feel that ur not going anymore and ur about to roll back soon, get the clutch out to friction point again and gas just a bit so ur car doesnt move (remember its downhill). lets translate this in automatic. if ur on a downhill, and waiting for ppl in front of u, you gas a little, and then when you wanna stop, you let go the gas until the car starts rolling back or stops moving. to keep the car not moving you have to press the gas a little more(cause its uphill), when you wanna accelerate you press gas more. same thing with manual. get to the friction point and gas it so ur car wont move, and whenever you wanna move ur car, just let the clutch out as much as you gas. when you wanna stop pop the clutch back in and let ur foot off the gas. when you about to roll back, get to clutch to friction and gas it alittle, and ur car wont move.
that trick is better so you wont roll back at all when you driving on a traffic uphill or stop sign. letting ur foot off gas to brake, brake to gas, and all that takes longer to do and rolls ur car more quicker. eventually ur gonna be good at getting it to the friction point later on after months of practice that switching from brake to gas and getting it to friction point to move ur car forward will be a piece of cake.
btw, doing wut i said on a traffic uphill (around sunset) is not a good idea. ull definetely burn ur clutch cz ur gonna play with it too much. suggestion: dont take ur car to sunset uphills anytime soon

this probably is the longest post i ever made

dude..the best way to learn is to just drive your car...no one can tell you how to work the clutch...you have to learn how to feel when its engaging and then how much gas to give it...everyone has trouble at first.its just learn as you go.and find a hill with no traffic to practice on thumbsup

Man i saw my friend swicth gears in his integra w/out hiting the clucth. He pretty much forced the shifter into another gear. The car made all this noise but he made to the other gear.

Shifting without a clutch, that sounds impossible... i disengage gears without clutch, but how do you go in without it?

it's easy. only do it when your clutch goes out tho. you have to match your synchros then drop it into gear. the way i do it is shift into first with the clutch...then take it out of gear as i come close to 3K, then drop it in gear almost after 3K. you can drop it into first w/out using the clutch but you have to do it in the lower RPM range. i've done it multiple times by accident. i don't do this regularly tho. i only do it when people don't believe me it's possible.

as far as regular driving, you have to find out what the range is on the friction zone. friction zone = the zone where the transmission starts to give/lose power to the wheels using the clutch. but just drive it as much as you can.

POWER SHIFTING grin

blip the gas, throw the shifter into neutral, then into gear

you screw it up, you could screw up your tranny BAD

I suggest never doing it...i can personally shift faster with the clutch... tongue

^^^ yeah, power shifting is BADDDD!!!!! if you are looking to start from 1st, try this...have it in 1st with the clutch on the floor, blip on the gas a few quick times an keep the rpms between 1,500 and 2,000 like this and start to let the cluctch out...you'll feel it grab, and then you ease into the throttle and let all the way off the clutch...I bought my celi as my first ever stick, and taught myself in Atlanta Rush Hour traffic eek thumbsdown...soeone recommended this method to me, and I spent 2 hours between first and second and only stalled twice...it works...good luck

just shift normal. i'm still learning as well as i only have my celica for 7 months. this is what i do nowadays:

1. N in dead stop
2. go to 1st
3. drop the clutch a bit (about 900rpm)
4. drop the clutch a bit more and press gas a bit
5. simple switch off.

it's a slow start, but you won't rev that much. plus if you need to catch up, there is always the lift... thumbsup

Hehe, thanks guys. Everything is very helpful.

I am getting very used to driving a stick and am loving every minute of it.

At first, I regreted getting a stick shift because I was able to drive very well in my Auto GT because of its handling and etc.

But today, I took everyone's advice and really enjoyed the drive. It was great. Have not stalled for a while now, so that is pretty cool.

Thanks

When you are driving at like 7k rpms, in 6th gear and approaching a turn, brake till 4k, clutch in, downshift, kick the clutch again, with some e-brake, and that should do the trick wave

Its a wear part, completely depends on how you drive it. If you shift without a clutch it would last forever, if you beat the crap out of it you will get 30,000 miles. Average I would guess is about 80,000 miles.

I found driving without the clutch much easier in a transport truck because the RPM range is much lower & matching the gears is really easy. I did it the first time I drove my buddies Freight Liner.

Personally, if I'm stopped on a really steep hill with someone right on my ass, I pull up the e-brake, use my feet to get the car into gripping (so it will at least not roll backward), then drop the brake.

I find it better to practice hilly takeoffs in the dirt (preferably in a truck). That way if you gun it a little too hard, it's not gonna jerk around or squeal the tires, as you'll just spin out a bit in the dirt... Which is what trucks are for. grin
