I was wondering after reading RevMonster's accident... Glad your okay thumbsup

https://celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/thread.f_1870109523_0_collapsed_5__1.html#1870109523

Obviously the driver couldn't say she didn't see the celica stopped, I mean how can you miss a red car confused

What do you think would be the best defense in and accident like this where you see the darn SUV coming from the rear and your in traffic?? one can only use the horn as a warning but

What if..
1. You put on the E-brake ?
Im assuming more of the force would be forced to be absorbed by the celi..

2. You put the car in Neutral
Theoretically the force from behind should then transfer it to the car ahead ..??

The best thing to do would be to get out of the way.

Other than that, idunno
The force of the impact is still going to destroy the car, whether your in neutral of not.

I would want my car to be applying as much force against the oncoming car as possible. I'd rather be trying to stop the other car than having the other car lauch me into the air like a damn missle. In short I'd go with brake, parking brake anything I could get in helping stop the other vehicle. Only if there was absolutely no way to get out of the other car's path.

try to get out of the way, if you can't, just sit there.

if it's in neutral, you risk going forward into another car.

Yeah if you could get out of the way that be the best by all means and honking the horn to warn others some mad SUV is coming..

But if you were pretty much stuck and had no where to go i thought neutral would then transfer all the force to the next car..

then again its not like two metal balls hitting each other like in physics tongue

so ebrake it is thumbsup and praying that the celi would be able to take the hit happywink

It is like two metal balls, not all the force is transferred to the second car, an equal force is transferred to the stiking car in the opposite direction.

In neutral, both cars will "stick" together and cause less damage, but you run the risk of hitting another car in the process, making a rear end accident into a multiple car accident, and your air bags will go off.

rev could have gassed the car a little, and got some forward momentum going, and then hit the brakes as the other car hit him, and would have had little to no damage, but, that takes split second thinking.

He's not a race car driver spineyes

Sultan, that's why I said he couldn't have done it.

You'd have to press the gas the instant the other car touched you, and stop both cars the instant before they touched the other car.

In a lab, maybe. Real life, no way spineyes

I've been in this situation(sp) before and I saw the lady coming at me. I don't know why but, I put my car in reverse and started backing up slowly. She stopped and didn't hit me. I think that it was the reverse lights coming on that got her to look.

On a different ocassion I've tapped my brake lights a lot eekI mean a lot . Anything to get them to stop.

I would just keep my foot pressed hard on the brake and put my head back as hard as i could on the headrest so it wouldnt get ripped back in the process. The celi can take a pretty good rear end hit from what i expirenced.

Yeah, the whole deal with Red Celicas does not really help. I used to drive a Red GT, very bright. But there are MANY times where other incoming cars tend to not see me and if I had not move, I would have been toasted.

And yeah, if I see a car moving my way at a fast ass speed, I would pray to god that the dumbass is smart enough to move into the shoulder lanes to brake.

putting the car in gear to steer out of the way quickly is tough with a stick, but possible maybe with an auto. If the car in front of yours is heavier than you...like another SUV...it could be even worse getting squished between them. The other car (SUV) is moving and you are not (not to mention heavier) so you will always lose. I'd say it is better (if the vehicle in front of you is lighter) to put it in netrual so the Kinetic Energy of the SUV is turned into KE to move you, rather than more of the KE of the SUV being absorbed into the frame and body of the celica.

As a physical example:
Hold your two hands out in front of you. Slam your left into your right with your right hand rigid. Then do it with your right hand limp. Feel the difference?

Everyone knows in boxing and martial arts you are supposed to "roll with the punch" instead of tensing up to take the hit. That would cause you to be knocked-out.

So the best would be NEUTRAL and off the brakes, AND gassing it a little (it doesn't matter if it's at the exact time of impact...it will still help).

^^ great example..

Kinetic Energy was the last thing I learned in physics before I changed majors.. which why I wondered what would be better..

another good point is if its a SUV or a compact in front of you. I'll have to try to stay away from driving behind an SUV, Van or big rig now..

i guess thats one advantage on an auto over a stick... you can just hit the auto shifter in Neutral without having to depress anything..

The only problem with letting your vehicle absorb the energy by not applying the breaks is that it benefits the car but not the occupant, especially one without a seat belt. The faster the car moves forward, the more danger to the occupant.

if i saw a suv about a hundred yards behind me and i was stopped at a stoplight and i knew it was goign to hit me. open the door and break for it. hehe. NO DONT DO THAT chances are then shed see you and hit you. I used to have a mustang and i was hit in the back when i saw the car coming i let everything go and it hit me. it was a kia. it was smashed clear through to the windshield engine was damages everything to the window totaled. my bumper got scratched and the paint cracked across it and it cracked one of my tailights. it worked well but there was no one in front of me.

20% of my dream car goal has been reached. I own the celica.

You cannot separate the car and its occupant. If the car is crushed you are crushed. Impact energy transferred into the car is felt by the occupant. Haven't you heard of people simply being killed by force of impact? Always wear your seatbelt and act like we learned something from Pricess Diana's death. Even without one's seatbelt it would be better to roll with the hit. So specific to this scenario in discussion: when you are hit from the back you will go back into the seat and the car will go forward...and when you hit the car in front of you...your air bag will go off stopping you whether you have your seatbelt on or off...but of course you should always be wearing your seatbelt anyway.

I just noticed something wrong about your first statement. By not applying brakes, you are allowing LESS of the energy to be absorbed by the car and the occupant, because more of the energy of impact would be imparted to move the car (KE). You state the opposite.

Well, believe it or not... I gave serious thought to shifting into N when I saw her coming. I had a good 2-3 seconds of knowing what was about to happen... but I couldn't do too much. The lanes around me were still moving (and full). I figured that without my belt on, I'd be far better behind hit hard from behind than being pushed into the car ahead of me and having my bag go off...

so who shall be the Godfather laughsilly just imagine someone hits one celi then all of a sudden just droves of celi's appear grin

So in essence the best case in this sorta accident is the Neutral heck you want as much KE transfered over passed your car tongue

when i pull up to a red light or whatever i put it in neutral and just coast to the light. I don't see a poing in racing to a red light... so people go around me and all but i dun care... Well, when i get to a light i keep it in neutral with my foot on the brake until i know a few cars behind me have stopped then i keep it in neutral with foot off brake (if I'm not on a hill tongue ) I heard it was bad just to keep the clutch pushed in for a long time?

Right in essence the Energy or Work required to move the stopped car is spread out over a distance (d) where W=Fd. Work = Force times distance. The KE or Kinetic Energy of the moving SUV is the Work being applied onto the stopped car to move it. KE = Fd. The ebrake creates greater frictional forces between the car and the ground and would thus make d smaller, the distance the car would move. The smaller d is, the larger the force F of impact on the car and the occupant. The larger d is (no brakes) the less Force was impacted on the vehicle. If we were to know the speed the SUV was traveling when it hit the car and the mass of the SUV then we can determine the KE which is 1/2mv(squared). If we measure the distance the car moved, we can actually figure out how much Force was impacted on the car. We can call Toyota and find out how much the structural integrity of the car is in the rear and what it's Force rating is. If the force of the accident exceeds this data from Toyota, we have an argument for structural damage created.

i was taught if you turn your wheel to the left...you might be pushed to the left(when your hit from behind) and may avoid hitting the car in front of you...my dad did this on the san diego freeway...he saw the car coming in the rearview mirror and started turning the wheel, we missed the bronco in front of us and where pushed to the side of the road. were where in an 87 volvo...AKA a freakin tank thumbsup

I was in the left lane... if I got pushed to the left, I would have been in the car pool... with cars doing 70-80 MPH. Then again, maybe I should have. There would have been no question that the remaining portion of my car would be considered totaled rofl
