Audio Gurus - Please Step Inside

Hello,

The GTS I got came qith a set of JL 12" Subs and a Fosgate AMP. Stock head unit BTW.

When I turn the head unit on, even when the sound is near off, I can hear this hizzing sound. Is like if you turn your speakers up ALL the way up and have nothing play on it.

Is there a way for me to get rid of this noise?

This is the first time I own a sound system on a car, so I dunno what it is suppose to sound like, especially on some 2 x 12".

Hissing is coming from your SUBS? JL subs especially?? They shouldn't even be able to do this.

Ok, first things first, goto your RF amp (they're pretty overpriced, but I got a good deal on one and have one too smile and there should be a frequency cutoff that cuts off all frequencies above a certain point (like 25 hz).

Like I said, it's impossible that the JLs- or really any subs- can project high pitched hissing- but lets do this and then worry about the impossible later.

Any change? Try disconnecting the RCA leads to the amp- any change?

Are they even RCA leads? Or are they high level inputs? That might be the cause of the problem.

In any event, the hissing is most likely coming from your other speakers- does it relate to the position of the throttle? (IE, if you rev, does the buzz increase)

Another thing to look for is if either the head unit or the sub amp have bad grounds- try (if you can) grounding them to the same point on the car. This kills hiss like no other.

If you can't do that, try buying a Ground Loop RCA passthrough from radio shack.

But, chances are, it's probably just time for a new headunit that has RCA preouts if you're using high level inputs.

Haha...you know what tho? I have no idea what you just said to me.

But I will print this out and bring up to the car and hopefully see some progression.

All I know s that:

There is a Red and a White RCA cable that is connected to this clear looking transformer right under the glove box. From there, I believe that the rest of the cable goes back to the Amp. I think that they bypassed the stock Amp when installing the Subs.

At first, the Sub would cut out and etc. I think something is loose or something.

Should I take it to an Audio professional you think?

mine does this also but i replaced the stock headunit and i am gettin that same noise just through my highs and mids. btw i have kicker components highs n mids. but what i was told is a bad ground would be the cause of that noise. i have lots of filters and stuff on my subs and i dont get that noise through my subs so the fact that you are gettin that noise through your subs is strange. you should prob buy some high freq filters, pretty inexpensive but effective thumbsup

That is what I thought. It still bumps and etc. tho. Just when the vol. is on low, it buzzes a bit.

How much should I expect to pay for them to fix this?

they pretty much gotta reinstall ur system.my advice to you is dont get a cheap job on installing ur system.its best for you to pay lil more n get it done right.i know dis through exprience.for profesional installation it'll prolly cost you around 100 - 120.if you have enough money to buy a head unit, buy it from where ever ur gonna get ur system reinstalled.they'll give you a better price on installation for buying something from there.

I bought the car used. The guy had the System installed already.

Not sure which JLs. Will try to check it out tonight. I park kind of far so I can't just go outside and take a peek.

Where can I find the ground?

OO wait...

When I pulled out this little device underneath the glove compartments last night, there is a single thing black wire that comes out of this unit. It is just chillin there, not connected to anything.

I would be willing to bet that the device you pulled out is a "line lever convertor." It takes speaker level outputs (speaker wires) from your headunit and converts them into RCA (red/white) cables. The black is a ground to "help" eliminate noise. You could try groundinig that to a bolt, shit just turn your radio on, do what ever it is you gotta do to hear that sound, then touch that black wire to a bolt that is bolted to metal, not plastic and see if the noise goes away. Firstly, I think it's a grounding issue, secondly I would bet it's the fact you are still using your factory deck. I have done several installs with Line level convertors, and they all seem to pick up some kind of noise. Don't run out and pay someone to fix it for you, let everyone on here try to help, then if all else fails... fork out the dough. let me know how this turns out.

what I have heard, is that when you are two sets of rca wires, (one for your highs and one for you bass), is that they should be run on opposite sides of the car. When they are run on the same side, that how you get that noice. Its just a theory that I heard, not to sure if its correct.

My car might be slow, but at least it looks nice!

Thanks for the advice.

Well I disconnect and reconnected all of the wires and is still making that noise.

And when I was looking at that little black wire on what you think is a line lever convertor, it does not seem to be stripped. So do you think I should strip it?

I checked the Amp and nothing was wrong with the connectiong. All of the wires seems to be doing okay, not stripped or chewed up.

Also, the hissing is NOT from the JLs. The hissing is coming from ALL of the factory speakers. So the tweeters on the front and all of the side speakers. It is as if the volume knob on the factory speaker is set to really high or something. Is there maybe a knob that I can turn down on the amp or something to make so that it is pushing all of the volume to the subs and not the factory speakers?

Chelica, do you have a camera? could you take a pic of the factory amp and that box/wire you found under pasanger seat?

Also where is the AMPS ground wire going to. the wires may look ok, byt the point on the car its going to may be a bad spot.

Is super dark here already, that was why I stopped looking, but tomorrow before work I might be able take some shots. My digicam has been acting up, so yeah, it is an old school Mavica, haha.

But I believe that they bypassed the factory Amp because I remember tha factory Amp is pretty good on my GT and now the sound coming from the factory speakers aren't as good.

But the 2x12s are actually connected to a Fosgate Amp in the trunk.

On subwoofers, they're not really subseptable to that kind of interference, so running power and line on different sides of the car isn't going to help much, if at all (since the noise isn't coming from the subs anyway (THANK GOD)).

If that is a line converter, than strip that black wire and ground it to a bolt, it will probably lesson the noise considerably..

but. I have to tell you this man. All your problems are going to fixed with a good install of an aftermarket headunit.

Actually

The two RCA wires are for the left channel and right channel of sound its not for highs and bass (or also called lows) but you have part of this theory right. Your supposed to Run both RCA cables opposite to any power cables, for example: if you have a 4 gauge power cable runnin on one side to an amp, the RCA cables should be runnin on the other side to prevent interference from the power cable. Just so you know Highs, Mids, Lows are just frequencies in are put in one cable, they are not split into different cables. thumbsup

the simple solution to your problem is get an aftermarket head unit, why waste your time on somethin you will eventually change? the setup you have now is not healthy for your speakers and can cause more electrical problems thumbsdown

i highly recommend Pioneer and Alpine, they make some of the best head units. if you wanna save money get a Pioneer, Alpines tend to be more expensive.. and just choose any pioneer head unit that has the features you need grin if you just need a cd player it be like $110 but it can go up to $1500 if you want dvd touch screen. its all up to you thumbsup

So as long as I get a Pioneer or an Alpine, I will end up with something good? No matter which model it is?

Really tho, the only thing I will need is a CD Player, but if it can read CD-RW and MP3 files, that will be freaking great!

No need for the fancy DVD touch screen and etc.

Something that will go well with my sound system right now.

Thanks Tony.

As far as wattage? Does it matter? You know how some advertise different things and etc.

Can these brands be had for around $150?

Uhh sorry ravertony if I made you think that I thought that RCA cables carry only one sort of frequency- I work with RCAs, XLRs, Coaxials, etc etc for a living smile What I meant was, noise that goes into those RCA cables going towards the subs isn't going to effect the rest of his speakers, and you're not gonna hear it out of the subs because they can't replicate anything of the mid-high frequencies- so it's like the noise there doesn't exist at all.

Yeah, and I support the recomendations ravertony gave ya. Personally I love alpine head units. High quality. I dont have much personal expierence with pano's- other than that I dont like their button layouts and colors.. etc etc. But they make high quality stuff too- for a big cheaper.

Alpine 9803, it's just a cd player; I bought it right as they were being discontinued so I got a LOT off the pricetag- made it worthwhile. Didn't need an mp3 player, as I have a computer in my car that runs through the 9803 for that...

Mine does the same thing, although I was told that some of the wiring was a bit differant in the '03+ models so they had to order in a differant harness and in result it gives this high pitch buzzing sound when the volume is down low.

I have another question. I am thinking of selling these 2x12" in the box enclosure instead. I don't think I will be needing this massive ass sound system in my trunk. It is also making my car roll back because of its damn weight on the slightest incline. This is VERY annoying since I am a noob in driving a stick.

How much do you think I should be asking for 2x12" JL Subs in a box enclosure that is basically as big as my trunk space in the Celica.

I am thinking of keeping the Amp tho, it is a Fosgate Punch 800.

So if I was to start my price at $400 for both speakers and box, that is reasonable? Or should I ask $500?

OO okay. I was just talking to another member earlier, and I decided to just keep one of the 12" JL. Sell the other one with the box enclosure and find me a smaller box enclosure.

Do you guys know of a place that sells those single 12" box enclosure that is pretty cheap but does not look like crap?

And I will prolly sell the 1x12" JL with the Box for 2x12" for $100? Is that good then?

So any ideas on where I can find a small enclosure for one 12" JL sub?

Also, on the Amp (Fosgate 800 Punch), there are these frequency knob, can I turn them down? I am sure that if I lower them, I would not be hearing this slight hizzing when I turn the volume down low.

Right now, my stock speakers are running off the Fosgate Amp. I took off the Subs.
