I'm looking for some advice from you audio guys... I'll be having a 10w7 and 500/1 installed in my trunk to round out my system and I have a dilemma:

- should I buy the sub already mounted in the JL enclosure and put it in that way with minor work done to stabilize it...

- ...or should I just buy the sub alone and have the shop fab an enclosure for me?

I'm looking for something that can be uninstalled and removed if I desire it, not an enclosure that wil be a permanent part of the car...

2 Pics follow to give you an idea of what I'm referring to...

when you say removable define what you mean. You wanna be able to pull it out whenever or just someday you will disassemble it and take it out.

Boxes have to be approved by a JL dealer to recieve the warranty. I dont know if a self made box would pass.

I plan on leaving it in for awhile... but if I sell the car or swap in a bigger sub, I want to have it taken out without too much hassle

make ur own. just glass off the rear corner of ur trunk. . . and put the seven there. . . possability are endless, but if you go custom.. ATTEMP IT URSELF FIRST.. . what do you have to lose. nothing. you will gain some knowledge about glass and if you fail .. . then goto a shop and have em do it. . . .

if you do it urself you wont spend more then 100$ to complete the whole thing. a shop is going to change ur a damn good pennie . .. . . .

I see your point bro but I'd rather pay more and have it done properly, besides I don't have much time to do a trial and error fab myself being that I'm new at this... I'll just stick to my specialty and let the audio guys do theirs - happywink

ya. . molding doesn't take that much time. its after you get the base mold. and get it wraped in cloth .. . its the sanding that is a bitch. . . but nothing is wrong with having an audio shop do it. . grin

awesome - how long do you think it'll take to mount the 500/1 and build an enclosure for the sub + wiring etc...

if your already dropping down the cash for a w7 and jl amp why would you wanna go cheap with a self made box that may not sound as good as its full potential. If you have a good audio shop you know its going to be quality and sound as good as it can.

true - that was my first option but I thought that going with a JL enclosure, it would be spec and sound perfect - I'd just have to do a few minor things to seat it properly in the trunk...

i did it in the winter. . it took my quite awhile but it was my first attempt. . . . next time wont take as long, now that i know more about glass. Sanding is what takes so long. you neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed a power sander. .

Go with the JL box.

I read an article in a car audio magazine... not only is the w7 very sensitive to the size/shape of the box, but also to HOW you mount it in the box.

yeah i'd get the JL box too...

and then build something around it so it doesnt look like just a box in a trunk...

id glass your own box... thats what i plan on doing after i finish up some Performance things. i think you get more respect when you say that YOU made it/installed it or whatever. rather than saying, 'oh i took it to joe blow down the road'. wink

I built mine, it sounds awesome, only because i took audio classes on learning how to make Fiberglass and wood enclosures. personally, I'd take it to a JL Specialized shop and have them make a pimp box for it. W7's are very sensitive and required a SEALED box, otherwise you can kiss your $300 sub goodbye.

The only reason I'd make my own box in your case is if I had low-end subs, which you don't, you have top-of-the-line W7's so I'd have an audio specialist make your box imo.
