Hello,

I checked the DMV websites but just wanted to be 100% sure on how to go about selling a car.

The car that I am trying to sell is fully paid off, I have the paper that states it under my name.

So if I do have a buyer, how do I go about doing the transactions? Please be specific as possible. Thank you!!

It all depends on what state you're in. Usually theres some paperwork the buyer fills out stating the price he payed for the car that he takes to his DMV and uses to pay the sales tax when he registers it.

Ahrite, that is pretty much checked out. Do you think I can do all of this at a local DMV instead of mailing the paperworks?

Also, what kind of service should I do before selling the car? Oil change service, smog test, and anything else? What is it called when you just want to get your car into a basic service?

About the service... don't bother with the oil unless it's actually due for it. That money is better spent on a good detailing and wax job, if you want to get the most possible for the car. You could go crazy and get new tires, brakes, oil, ect... but you'd never recoup the cost of all those things in the final selling price.

Well, the guy is going to buy the car this Thursday. He saw it and wanted it.

All I have to do is get rid off this Check Engine Light that came on the ZX3. Afterwards, get a Smog Check, and finally I will just do a basic service like oil change.

The main problem is this Check engine light. My mother borrowed the car and did not tighten the gas cap real well and ever since then, the check engine light has been on.

With that light on, I won't pass the smog test. So I would have to go to a Ford Dealership and get my ass raped on their prices.

Yup the ECU has been resetted, but I think it is Hard Set so I need to pull up the code.

Yeah, why did you give me that crazy guy icon? The car is a Ford Focus ZX3.

I used to drive a Celica, but because of some jacked up circumstances, I had to give that up for a ZX3. I am now selling the Focus and purchasing a Celica again.

resetting the ecu should take the CEL away if it is only because of a gas cap. unhook the negative terminal on the battery and leave it like that for a while, and then put it back on. i think there something else like when you reset ur ECU, you have to drive it for a few days before you smog it. btw wut year is it? do you have to smog it or do you want to do it or is it a part of the sales deal? changing the oil is a good idea and keeping ur engine bay clean is a better idea if the buyer didnt look at it yet.
1- clean air filter
2- clean oil, hopefully no dirt in it.
3- good transmission fluid.
4- clean overall engine bay
5- good interior
6- nice and shiny paint

Yeah, that is what I am afraid of. I unhook the neg. side of the battery for 20 mins. It resetted the whole car and the engine light is off, but once the cycle starts, which is about 15 minutes or so, it came back on. I am afraid that it might be something else. So tomorrow I will be bring the car to the local Firestone place and see if they can pull up the error code for me.

The guy who is going to purchase the car has already seen the engine bay and the exterior. He liked it a lot. Just the whole check engine crap. This might be the thing that will prevent me from getting my new Celica. I swear, there is always something that my parents tend to jack up for me. First it was the Celica, now the Focus...

O yeah, it is a 2001 ZX3. And I do have to smog it because you are required to do so before I can sell the car. And I need to get rid of the check engine light because that will single handedly cause my smog test to fail.

The way I see it is this: The car is being sold for $6750. Hopefully I can get the whole check engine light fixed with a passing smog test for about $675. With at least $6000, I am on budget for my GTS. If not, then I will have to settle for a GT. My fate is on this freaking Code reading tomorrow...how freaking stressfull!

O yeah, the "Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability", instead of mailing it, can me and the buyer just bring it to my local DMV? I rather do everything at once so that I know that the deal is on.

man cali is complicated. first relax. then go to your local dmv and ask them all the questions about legal stuff like the liability form and how to make the sale correct legally. then re-set ur ecu (u problitly have but do it again) then drive to a place to get a diagnostic test of the cars electrical system. then get it fixed. that is wat i would do in your case.

Hahhaa, that is true tho. Mostly the folks around here drive Civics. It will be cool to know another Celica driver.

So how do you like it so far???
