Obviously the cel is going to be a problem... Clean your mass air flow sensor (and throttle body for good measure) There's a guide for all this stuff on the site.
Do you think that your mods are going to make you fail the smog test?

Reset your ECU to see if the CEL goes away. If it doesn't, go to Autozone or some other auto parts store and have them tell you what CEL code the ECU is throwing. Then come tell us what it is.
You might need a new cataltic coverter, 230k miles is a LOT of driving for 4 years.
To reset the ECU, undo the negative terminal of your battery and let the car sit for approx. 15 minutes. Reatach the battery, start the car, and see if it's still lit.

I think he said that he tried resetting the ECU and it would come back on when he starts driving. My Focus is doing the same thing. I am waiting for Autozone to get their little device back in.

Don't do that. If it doesn't work and there is a real problem you'll fail. Find out what the CEL code is ASAP.

yea, bro...get the ecu reset, or get your codes pulled and tell us what it is...as for boring the block...it will probably run you around $1,500 - $2,000 for the boring and new pistons...BTW...how is your car holding up for 230,000 miles...that's awesome!!!!! if you want a less expensive route, then look at atk-engines.com...and call them, they can get you a longblock, ready to bolt in 1zz engine, with the head and everything on it for like $2695.00...its what I'm gonna do when I get that many miles on my celi

Chances are it's one of the O2 sensors on your car. Seeing as it doesn't come on until after you've been driving for a while it's more than likely not the cold start O2 sensor. I've never replaced the O2 sensor in my Celica so I'm not sure how hard it is to get to the portion of the exhaust where it's at. You might have to have a pro do it.

we have the C.A.R.B. legal thing, since in the 70's the sky used to be gray in the day time in LOS ANGELES, so they made stricter emission laws, and now the sky is a lot cleaner. every car need to get checked every four years to get the registration sticker on ur car. if you dont and a cop sees you then ull get a ticket and will have to take it to the smog test. actually it aint that bad I drove around for 6 months with expired tags and I only got a $25 dolar ticket when I got caught. Surprisingly it was a Parking Enforcement Officer (meter maid) that gave me the ticket and not the cops.

ikin, I would restore the car back to stock as much as you can, like putting the stock airbox in with new filter, not your old one. I would also put the stock exhaust back on. I have a new 02 GTS with 40k miles and I barely passed smog in cali. I just moved to La from Vegas so I had to get smogged for initial registration. I barely passed because I left my custom free flowing exhaust on cause I was too lazy to bolt my stock on, and also I didn't hook up all my vacuum lines because I forgot how they hook up. ok, technically I should not have passed the visual, but I just bolted the sensors on to my stock airbox somewhat behind it, so it looks right. I had to put the stock airbox in to pass the visual inspection, because I had a non-carb custom Intake made(my secret weapon). Also, I would run a high quality fuel system cleaner like red line's to clear out your system. You might want to invest a $100 OBD II scanner so you don't have to keep on running to autozone, etc to borrow a scanner as you fix your car. I bought the Innova Obd II for $130 with a $30 rebate. It works great. Also learn about trip drive cycles and about all the monitors on your car and the procedures you have to follow to have the monitors complete their diagnostic. In CA, you need at least 5 monitors to have run successfully and come back with no DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) to pass one part of the functional smog test.

hey thanks for all the info i really appreciate it but i know i the Intake and the exhaust wont play a factor since both are carb legal products, everythuing i buy must be carb legal or i wont mess wit it, were did you get that obd II scanner from? aight thanks!

all i gotta say is there are some people in westminster who will know what you mean when you say "This car HAS to PASS smog test." Give em a little tip and you'll be on your way. Anyways that's where most of the high horsepower supras go and pass smog (single Turbo, bpu, etc.) near orange county.

I got the Obd-II scanner from Kragen Auto Parts. Don't get the ghetto orange one for $100. Get the Innova $130 blue w/ black case one with $30 rebate. The Innova will show you the status of your diagnostic monitors, and has an auto scan update every 15 seconds.
I get my kicks on EC.
