This morning I noticed that when I stepped on the gas the engine would kind of lag and the RPM's would go a few hundred higher and then drop back down. It's like the torque takes awhile to kick in. Can anyone help?

I have a 2002 GTS w/ a Injen short ram and an HKS exhaust.
I've had both for over a year.

There is either a problem with your MAF sensor, or your throttle body.

OR

If the car revvs high without a noticable increase in speed, then it could be your clutch, but I don't know if that's happening to you, or if you have a manual tranny or not.

I do have a manual.
If it was the clutch would it be more gradual. This just happened all of the sudden.

Not necessarily. Mine gave out on me one night with no prior incidents.

at wat point in the RPM range does this happen. If its low end, Injen Intakes (both SRI and CAI) are notorious for lag.


TPR Intake! - Injens high end with AEM's low end and NO BOGGING!
TPR EXHAUST! - Exhaust made 10.5 whp peak and 32 whp at 6300 on my car!!!

So are your RPM's rising without an increase in speed, or is your car self revving itself?

It's when I press on the gas. The car just doesn't have the pull that it did yesterday. The RPM's only go a few hundred over and then when the torque feels like it's coming back the RPM's drop. confused

That sounds like it could be a lot of stuff.

You're RPM's don't drop with your foot still on the gas, do they? I'm still having trouble trying to figure out what you mean exactly. I didn't get much sleep last night.


Could be a problem with your Intake, make sure all hoses are secure and intact.

Also, could be clogged fuel injectors, or dirty/broken spark plug(s).

Or maybe the weather just sucks, or perhaps your AC was on and you didn't know it?

Could be a lot of things. Anything else noticable wrong that you can spot?

The RPM's do drop while my foot is on the gas. I starting to think more and more that it might be the clutch. It seems almost like it's not grabbing and the RPM's are going up and the it grabs and they come back down.

If it is my clutch do you have any idea on what a new one will cost? I have the extended warrenty and about 42,000 miles.

The clutch is not covered under warranty. A new factory clutch costs around $200-300 (forgot) and the labor is where it really gets expensive. It's an 8 hour job (at least that's where they quote you) and labor itself costs around $800. You could shop around and find some mechanic to do it for you on the side, and that would save you a shit load of money.

Also, if your foot remains on the gas and your RPM's drop, the problem is NOT your clutch. If your clutch was bad, then your RPM's would unnaturally increase for almost no reason, and your speed would remain constant, decrease, or barely increase.



Test your clutch...

Put your car on level ground with the parking brake up. Put the car into 1st or 2nd gear and rev up to around 3-4k RPM's. Dump the clutch and see if it grabs or not. Also, you can start the testing at lower or higher RPM's. Just make sure that your clutch is grabbing at mid-high range RPM's.

Another less violent way to test would be to take your car out on the highway or open road, and gun it and take it all the way to redline. Watch your RPM's on the shift.

What do they do?

If they grab immediately or only fall like 100 RPM's, then your clutch is fine.

If they fall like 500 RPM's, and you notice that your RPM's slowly begin to climb again, or don't even climb at all, then it's your clutch.

One night, I gunned my car, and went to shift at redline, and once I shifted, NO power went to my drivetrain, and my RPM's shot all the way up. Had to pull the car over and let the plate cool down so that it would grab again, and shifting above 4k was hit or miss. That means your clutch is on its last leg.




But once again, if your RPM's fall with your foot still on the gas, then it's not your clutch (thank god).

Well that's some good news.
This is what happened this morning.
I was driving 1st gear the car was kind of slugish and then picked up speed. I started to look at the RPM's in 2nd gear and as I presse don the gas they went from 3,000 to around 3,300-3,400 and the car didn't really accelerate and a second later the RPM's fell back down and the car started to pull a little more like it should. It seemed to happen in every gear. confused

Do you hear any sputtering coming from your engine bay?

I think its the MAF. clean that before you replace anything.

sounds like your clutch is slipping.

mine started to do the same thing yours is, dont step on the gas any more like that unless you want your car to stop working smile

I suggest you find a transmission shop near you back before i knew how to pull the transaxle i paid 300 for labor on the clutch & flywheel install.

you proly dont need a new flywheel only resurface if your putting the stock flywheel on

no because the clutch will slip up until a point where the vehicle speed more closely matches the rpm's then catch again, or he let off the gas slightly and allowed the clutch to grab
