"As discussed earlier, exhaust gas is hot. And we'd like to keep it hot throughout the exhaust system. Why? The answer is simple. Cold air is dense air, and dense air is heavy air. We don't want our engine to be pushing a heavy mass of exhaust gas out of the tailpipe. An extremely large exhaust pipe will cause a slow exhaust flow, which will in turn give the gas plenty of time to cool off en route."
Your talking about the heatshield that you can see when your looking down at the engine, by the firewall right? I just checked mine and its is cracked. It has a hole in it and should it be replaced, because it might be replaced under warranty. I hope.
Don't know if it's true for the 7th Gen Celica but with some cars your looking at a fire hazard if the exhaust system heat shields are damaged or not present.
