With 11:5:1 compression I'm guessing the 2ZZ engine is pretty sensitive to octane ratings.
Anybody ever used or mistakenly gotten lower than 92 octane in their GTS? How bad did it ping?
I think I know the answer to this already, but with gas prices being what they are I at least gotta make sure.

stay low on rpms and you'll be fine wit the middle stuff but its still not great

never tried anything lower than 91 and NOT going to
only 91 in mine.

my gf borrowed my car last summer. . . and filled it up with 87, cause that is what she puts in her car .. . . well i just drove 300+ miles to burn the fuel. but i never really got on it, but this story is pointless. . opps.
everyone that i talk to tells me that you can put 87 in it, but why do somthing that book tells you specifically not to do

well i heard from a mechanic that graduated from UTI (technical institute); that 91 and up are for v6, v8's, and modded cars. as for COMPLETELY stock 4 bangers, 87 is fine.

As I understand it higher octane is meant to prevent pre-ignition form pressure and or heat, the higher the compression the higher the chance of pre-ignition. Some engine designs are more sensitive to this than others. I kinda figured the 2zz would fall in that class.
But, Counter Point, (Dan Ackroyd voice); "Jane, you ignorant slut..." ala local news consumer hotlines and the like comes reports of some vehicles running just fine on lower than listed octane ratings, so I had to bounce it off of the sounding board that is eCelica.com.
A feature of the GTS that is really making me feel good about my car buying decision right now is the Jekyll and Hyde relationship between gas mileage and high Performance.
The geniuses of this car is that the higher power is on tap at the higher RPM's but down in the low RPM's its gets a miserly 23/32, I must admit that It makes for a good feeling when I'm filling up next to an SUV. Celica has amongst the best gas mileage to Performance ratio of everything else in its class.
