My friend is in a bit of a jam right now. He took out his auto filter to replace it, and the new one was wrong. His car is titled as an 00 GTS, but the guy at AutoZone said it looked like an 01 filter. Is there a dif on the GTSs in the trans between 00-04? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what your really asking? What filter? There is a difference between 00 and 02 for manual transmissions, but I don't know what filter you are talking about. Auto filter what? Makes no sense to me. Please specify.

Yes, automatic tranmissions have filters in them. It's fine now. He took it around, and wasn't able to find a replacement, but was able to get it cleaned out. The guy before him did SOMETHING to the tranny, and now he has some weird aftermarket filter. His crisis is over now.

Thank you. That's all I was originially asking the other day, while my friend's ride was dismantled.

Yes, Toyota Centers should have the filter. When they do transmission fluid changes, they have to change the filter too. YES! It's just as important, or more important as the oil filter. You should change your tranny fluid about every 30, or 60K. It makes a big dif in how smooth you shift.

No pics, cause he's already put it back together. I'll have to call him sometime, and find out where it is, but there IS one in there. There should be something on the bottom of your tranny that you unbolt, after you drain it. I think he said it has like 18 bolts on it. The filter is in there.

I'm not sure, but for AT you don't have to dismantal the tranny to clean things. Remove the trans pan and drain old fluid. Remove the old transmission filter or screen, clean the pan, and install a new pan gasket. Also AT needs a good tranny flush every so many miles. Just draining and replacing the fluids is not as good because some fluid is left over in the torque converter. So flush with AT and drain with MT. I could be way off here. Someone else want to explain?

Well just finished my tranny fluid change yesterday, it wasnt fun. U were right, 18 freaken bolts. I didnt have an allen wrench so i had to unbolt all 18 but i had to do it either way to get to the strainer. It took me and my girl about 3 hrs to finish, we took our time. thumbsup

Glad I could 'open' some eyes. I'm surprised that no one knew A/Ts had a filter in them. eek
