I dont understand the dynos. Cuz The celica stock is supposed to have 180hp, and I see all this dynos of all these guys with a buch of stuff in the hood of their cars, headers, Intakes, cat-backs and the only way they have more max power than 175 is having a Turbo or the supercharge...why???

Dyno's are measured to the wheels...180 is the hp before the power goes though the drivetrain. Usually I think its measured like 85%...if you have 180hp overall then you multiply that by 85% and you have 153hp to the wheels. I think my theory is right...someone help out.

You lose power through out your car. The horsepower just dosnt automatically go the the wheels. And dynos mesure wheel horsepower. Not crank. To find crank horsepower you have to uselots of math. Hope that helps??

the hp that the car is said to have is how much it generates at the crank...
but when you're putting that hp to the wheels, it's less due to engine, weight, and those characteristics.
GTS is 161 hp to the wheels...that's good since it's 180 stock...
the RSX type S is 200 hp and dynos at 160 something to the wheels

Depends on the car, and it depends what type of drivetrain the car has. 4WD cars obviously suffer from more power loss.

bhp is the # of horses an engine actually produces. whp (the # a dyno will give you) is the # that actually gets transferred to the pavement. if you're engine ran freely, then you would get a bhp AND a whp of 180. but the fact is that no engine runs freely. your engine must push air out through the exhaust. this causes backpressure which makes it harder for your engine to run. also, your engine turns many pulleys and your AC, among other things (ever notice your car runs better without the AC on?). because of all this extra friction, your bhp # is reduced to a dyno # that shows your whp. whp is a MUCH more important # than bhp because of this...it's what you are actually putting down. therefore, a car that retains a better percentage of its bhp is built more efficiently. meaning, a 180 bhp car that dynos at 160 (a typical celica gts) is built better than a 180 bhp car that dynos at 150 whp.

I think my theory is right...someone help out. actually i beleive that the 180 is what is comming out, the hp that goes into the motor is much greater (as our physics teacher says) by the way if you want to have some fun... 1 hp is 746 watts, so you can play around and see how many watts a car has instead of hp's (and by the way one hp for those who dont know is 550 ft/lbs)
