I was looking at some coilovers, some are really expensive (800-900) while some are around $100. What's the difference between the cheap and expensive ones.
And no one say quality. I'm looking for a technical answer, not common sense.
On another note, Dropzone is shit, right?

Ummm. not as strong I guess? Might not be a correct molding or something. Are these "cheap ones" off ebay?

Dropzone makes them also for around $130. If they cost as much as springs, I figure, why not go for it? But if they are shit, then forget it.

when I first got my car i ran a brand called high technology(140$), those coilovers were a piece of shit!!! I was bouncing like crazy and every time you hit a bump the cap of the coilover would rub against the metal top metal plate... drove me crazy I got ground control right now I can really feel the difference.. very well worth $450!!! you get what you pay for dude.. the difference is the spring

The cheap coilovers are springs that have a sleeve that allow you to lower and raise the car. The expensive ones are a full package, usually ride height adjustable, with shortened dampers made for lower ride heights and matched to the spring rates of the springs.

what he said ^^^^^^^ save up and get the tein ones well worth it IMO. take into concideration that with springs and shocks your gonna spend about 700 anyways for the springs and shocks... so 1000 for a far superior system is worth it.

i would never get a imitation coilover sleeve kit.
if you want coilovers do it right, don't get sleeves they are garbage some use progressive springs wiht change the spring tenison the lower you go. plus they kil you shocks and have a crap ride.
go springs or the real deal.

I'm thinking about getting the Tein Basics for $800 in a month or so because I don't think I really need the dampner adjustibility, plus they are like $300 more for the Tein SS. Would I need anything else besides an alignment with the Basics?

the main diff in price is materials used in the construction leading to quality and the brand name.

not too mention the 800 dollars teins are full coilover with shorted struts. if you get hugher grade teins then you get dmaper adjutsablitly.
also the struts and springs are set to work togetehr not a missmatched set.
skunk2 dropzone, etc. are jsut height adjustable sleeves mainly for show.

I am an advocate for true coilovers. That being Tein, Jic, Hotchkis (Bilstein Pss9), Tanabe, Zeal Function B-6, or whatever high quality/track proven settup. People here don't realize that with true coilovers it is much shorter than the whole stock strut assembly that would put at bay, the fears of blowing out the stock struts prematurely. The Celica needs a shortened strut if lowered, adjustable damping/spring rates don't hurt either. Also those same coilovers can be re-valved for a fraction of their price like new. No need to worry about what springs and/or what struts are good together. It's all there for you in one package. Lower it for just show on springs, great. I was always one to appreciate the Celicas #1 main attribute (the handling). If I can improve on that you're all beat. I won't need the power, unless in one great straight line.
