A/C Help! Been Very Hot Lately!

hello, for the past few days the weather here in southern california has been very hot..hitting record temperatures in the 100s. My A/C takes awhile to get cold...anyone know any fluids that has to be replaced/refilled, or anyway for the a/c air to become cold faster. thank you.

The stink is probably because of bacteria in the A/C... this can be prevented by turning off the A/C approx 5-10 min before you reach you destination (this makes the condensed water vaporate and thus doesn't "collect" bacteria)

On the "getting cold faster" matter, unless there is something wrong with the compressor or the A/C system has a leak (low on A/C fluid) there is nothing you can do... But get your compressor checked out at a professional... I would NOT recoment on you doing it yourself!!! The system is under pressure, and it can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing...

yeah i think that it's just real hot and since we have 4 banger our A/c systems are just slower than most to get really cold. mine is the same it's very bad during the summer, but eventually it get there.

i drive with my A/C on 24/7 since January 2001... no problems

if the air isn't getting cold quick enough for you, put it on #2 fan and keep the cool all the way down

if you want to make the A/C flow better, crack your window or your moon roof open - this will give a the warm air a place to escape (warm air raises) and will let some of the cabin reassure out

as for the "funny smell"... it was answered above grin

its been on only when i drive... aprox 60k miles

how bad can it be? its just a fan running through a filter that removes hot air. And as long as I keep that filter clean, I shouldnt have problems thumbsup

Freon isn't used in newer cars anymore due to some bullshit called the o-zone. grin

Freon was used generally in cars produced from 1995 and back.

no they do not use freon it is some other chemical. not sure what it is called though. freon is illegal to refill now so if you need to refill you need to converrt it over. same with refridgerators.

R-134.

R-12 was the original cooler. Much more heat removing power and faster.

Damn environmentalists thumbsdown

i know you can still refill r-12 here in illinois. it'll cost you few bucks an ounce, but it's still legal. R-134 goes for about 35 cents an ounce.
