I'm thinking about purchasing this '01 Celica GTS 6-speed manual in a little while. I've been told that the late '01 models were the better ones to get since they don't use DBW and are better for Turboing in the future. I am asking everybody's opinion if this is a good deal. The CARFAX is clean and good. Thanks for the input. Celica [autotrader.com]

Go for an 00 or 01 model if you plan to Turbo. The 2002 has the stupid lower rev limiter, and the 03+ cars have DBW.

On the 2002 GTS, the car cannot rev past redline. On other model years, you can rev past redline, to 8350 RPM.

This makes it easier to "land lift," meaning when you change from 1st to 2nd gear, the revs stay above 6500 RPM, meaning the car never drops out of the powerband.

the 2002 GTS is like .5 or .6 seconds slower because of this limiter. wave

What is DBW?? Is it just an American thing or was it also with the Canadian '03s?

Talk him down in price. He should go lower. Never pay the original asking price for a used car. The dealer probably gave 2K lower on the trade and has room to work. Check to bluebook and look for a private party to buy from.
The 02 rev limiter really has nothing to do with Turboing the car. If you Turbo'd it the entire torque curve would change and "lift" wouldn't matter like it does for NA.

How can I tell if that particular Celi is a late '01 model by the VIN? What numbers should I be looking for?

get an 03 GTS 6spd... Stafford has already solved the DBW problem and the interiors on the later models look nicer...

Seems like a good buy. You should try to test drive it and then move from there.
