i was wondering this since i lowered my car and noticed the rear fender well is wider than the front. would having different width tire/rims impact the handling (+/-)?

if the 'softeness' (or hardness) of your tire is the same...wider tires in your rear will mean your rear tires grip better.

obviously since the celica is fwd, this has no impact on acceleration, but the celica is prone to understeer and the feeling that, if pushed a littl more, the back will slide out. this should help eliminate this slightly.

the most popular wheel width is 7.5" (it's also the stock wheel width). mainly, these wheel widths are used with 205, 215, or 225 width tires, and those are the recommended tire selection for a 7.5" wide tire. if you want an even wider tire, i would suggest going with a wider wheel (the celica can take up to 9" in the rear..although 8" or 8.5" would be the best.)

good info and thanks. so, if i was looking into a 235x40x17 tire and a 17x8 rim what's the best offset? would that combo even fit and if so will it fit the wheel wells good (no rubbing either)???

i've heard of people putting 235 wide tires on the 7.5" wheels and not having a problem with them. (it's just 1 size more than recommended).

obviously 235 wide tires on a 8" wide wheel would work better , and you can even go 245 if you like.

i've never heard of anyone with an 8" wide front wheels having a problem with rubbing. the lower sidewall (40 compared to 55 in a stock celica gts with alloys) helps

for a celica, try and keep your wheel offset between 35 and 45 and you'll have no problems. a little hedging on either side of that won't hurt..but thats you're benchmark.

off topic but just fyi:

i assume that since you have a gts you have the 16 inch alloys.

the stock tire/wheel settings for a stock gts are 205/55/16 and 16 X 7.5"

your desired tire/wheel setting are 235/40/17 and 17 X 8"

while your tire/wheel width 'grows' (obviously) your space in your wheel well actually grows by 1/2" due to the differenc between a 55 sidewall and a 40 sidewall.

just something to think about because most people try and fill up that space rather than make it more obvious.

here: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

this will give you an idea of how different your wheel/tire settings are according to height thumbsup
