I've spent HOURS searching other posts and the consensus is pretty clear on the following: (FOR A GTS)
AEM CAI Gen 2 for torque and HP thru-out the curve INJEN CAI for more HP at lift
In respect to sound, it appears as tho the INJEN CAI is a little more aggressive and louder then the AEM, but the AEM is still noticeable.
What I'm a bit confused on is regarding the Injen Short Ram. I understand that the HP gain is a little less, it looks prettier under the hood, but what about torque.. are there any noticeable gains there with a GTS? Is the HP gain mostly at lift, or lower end too?
There were conflicting posts regarding the sound. Some said there was no sound difference, others said there was. Can anyone who has heard the 2 comment on this? Also, does the SRI make a "released air" sound when you shut the car off?
In terms of installation, should I follow the instructions posted for the rmm Short ram Intake? I assume they are similar.
ok well first things first, are you looking for the maximum amount of power or are you just looking for the sound? because for the max power (for drag) and max sound, you'll want the injen cai. If you get sri, you're really not gonna get much of a difference in power or sound...yes you will get a very very small amount but in my opinion i dont think sri is worth it. If you're just going for looks and for less money, get the sri. If you're planning to make yourself go fast, then injen cai is a great place to start. Oh yea and also the reason the cai gets more power gains is because it is closer to where air is flowing past and around the outside of the car...the sri is closer to the engine and is therefore warmer. the cooler the air the more gains you will get.

yes it does a whoosh sound when yu turn the car off. yes it makes smaller gains than a CAI. here is a dyno of a 6sp gts with injen short ram
a cai produces slightly higher power gains on a STOCK celica than with a shortram. if you add exhaust componenents such as a header or exhaust, the differences will be more recognizable (in favor of a cai).
basically, a shortram is just a wider Intake pipe. a cai is a wider Intake pipe as well, but it also has the advantage of 'cold air' (as cold as the weather is outside). your engine bay is hotter than the outside air, so the cai uses the cooler outside air to produce more power.
in short: cold air = more dense. more dense = more oxygen. more oxygen = more combustion. more combustion = more power.
then injen shortram does produce a deeper tone than a stock Intake. it is allowing the engine to suck more air into itself, and this produces more exhaust wastes that translate into a more aggressive sound.
and yes, the rmm shortram install instructions will be very similar to the injen instructions (although your injen shortram will come with instructions of it's own)

And how "ok" is that when it's like 20 degrees outside? Is there such a thing as "too cold" for incoming air?

A boats a boat, but the mystery box could be anything....Even a boat!
interesting dynos. I've been getting redy to buy a shortram Intake, but the CAI is pretty nice.
Anybody else notice the dip in power around 3K on the CAI dyno? it's a non-issue on the shortram.
Being one who drives an automatic GTS, I need as much power down low as I can get, thus I'm still leaning towards a shortram.
8.6 HP gain from the shortram, 16.5 HP gain from the CAI that's double the gains in terms of horsepower, but 8+ horsepower from a shortram isn't too bad either.
You have to be careful not to hydrolock the engine with a CAI, and if it's under warranty, there's a good chance the dealer will bitch about the CAI being on your car because of this.
Also if you notice, the CAI gains are only truly noticable in lift, below 6200 RPMS, the gains are negligible, and pretty much identical to the shortram.
If you are racing, get the CAI, if you daily drive the car or it's for show, go with the shortram.
You could always buy a shortram and a CAI, and swap them out depending on the circumstances as well. some Intakes can be used as either a short ram or a CAI, depending on wether or not you install the extension. You can also just buy lenghts of tubing to attatch to the shortram instead of the filter, and attach the filter to the extension instead, you get the benifit of a CAI, with the ability to revert back to the shortram at will
Personaly, I am going with a K&N Typhoon system for my car. However, I hear the blitz LM system is great as far as shortrams go (the filter is almost at the throttle body, great for top-end gains).

the dynos posted are from a gts 6sp. auto gts would have lower numbers. as far as short rams they are terrible off the line if you have been in idle for a while (or when the temp gets HOT in the engine bay). mind you these dynos were run with the hood up and a fan on...a short ram typically would garner more hp while on a run where air passes though the engine bay to cool the surrounding temp on the Intake. i have had a INJEN SRI on my GT and that was my experience. personally auto gts owners have vouched for aem for low end gains...

think of it this way...the inside of your engine is how hot? in front of the wheel well, just behind the front bumper is how hot? where is the sun beating down on; your hood or under your fender?
