Today, I drove down my neighborhood, got onto a main street, went from 1st-2nd and when I tried shifting from 2nd-3rd, the shifter wouldn't go into 3rd.
Then it wouldn't go into any gear and was stuck in neutral.
I coasted to a stop, shut the car off, checked the brake fluid resevior to see if there was missing fluid. It was full.
The clutch wasn't slipping at all.
After 5 minutes, I restarted the car and the shifter went into gear but not without a little effort.
Once I started moving, I did the "test" to see if the clutch was slipping by going 45 mph in 5th gear. I then went WOT and there was no tach jump before speedo jump which ruled out a bad clutch.
I think I narrowed it down to either a bad throw-out bearing or bad synchros.
I have a JDM TRD clutch installed in May-2003, a TWM SS and Redline MT90 gear oil. Ever since October, the throwout bearing would squeak at idle after driving in lift.
CID498 said that it it is a bad throwout bearing because it sounds like the bearing finally went bad after all those times it would squeak. The squeak meant there was high friction inside or around the bearing creating heat and leading to breakdown.
Could it be that my throwout bearing failed when my shifter wouldn't get into gear?

If the gears are still sticky tomorrow, I am going to take it to the same Toyota dealership that installed it to see if they could cover it under parts warranty since it hasn't been a year yet.

A few hours after that incident, i drove the car around my neighborhood to see if the problem happened again. It didn't, but some of the gears would be sticky. They would be hard to get in or out of. Other times, it would shift just fine. After hitting lift a few times, the throwout bearing squeaked louder than normal when I came to an abrupt idle.

This sucks because I was supposed to go road racing on friday which is 2 days away. Earlier this week, I went through the trouble with CID498 to install new KYB AGX struts and Hotchkis springs. Now I have this problem to deal with. This is so fustrating.

sounds like the throwout bearing...

Synchros would grind and still go into gear.

Replacing the throw out bearing shouldn't be too hard.
