when do you shift when racing?

what rpm do shift every gear at when you're racing in a 2000 Celica GT.

Racing straight line it's the redline. Racing twisties, I stay in the power band as much as possible even if it hurts to do so. I drive a GTS also so can not fully comment.

but then when it comes to a point that you lose power, and you can see that the gear that follows gives more hp at lower rpm then the gear that is high revving. well, if not on stock ecu, then on modified.

thats not true... your supposed to shift so that you land in your peak RPM's for the powerband... with celica's its redline... some other cars are faster when you shift below redline.

Man, people need to race the GT more.

The answer is simple 6400rpm, thats peek in a GT. DO NOT bounce of the redline, its not a GTS and you loose power doing that.

You'll feel it when you hit it right, very smooth pull.

the very first time i raced was with my gts and i raced a friend who has a gt, both manual. he got a big lead because i suck at the takeoff and did not get it right. I had to push the car into the red to beat him (yeah, almost lost) the driver of the gt said he was shifting at his red. my second run i raced a civic with a gsr engine and even with a better launch i lost, this time i did not pass the red, had i another 100ft i would have past him (he beat me by like .03, had a better e.t. though this time) *the powerband changes when you add Intake etc. I was always told to shift below the redline to avoid throwing a rod. haven't raced since but would like to know when to shift a gts, I have AEM CAI only

with a celica gts, its fuel cutoff (it's all about lift)

in a gt, it doenst have lift but you should still shift at fuel cutoff. the celica gt still has a 1.8L engine that produces minimal torque and the powerband is high in the rpms. so the higher you shift, the closer you will land to your best powerband thumbsup

if you drive a gts...def race at fuel cutoff. i've raced at a track and it's faster that way. others have raced at tracks and have done better that way.

the fuel cutoff is there so you don't blow your engine. the redline is there to tell you not to DRIVE in the redline..going there for a few seconds won't hurt it anymore than driving hard up to the redline.

yeah but if you shift below the redlines your gonna drop below your powerband if you do shift at redline it should drop right about where its making the most power, to me that sounds best

I understand what your saying, IMO you should drag the clutch just a little to avoid that. If you granny shift then I agree with you 100%. I find that smashing the redline hurts more than it helps, but every driver is different.

I think peak torque in a GT is somethig right around 5,000 rpm, I try to shift around 6,400 rpm when I'm racing, and stay pretty steady as for picking up speed...but that's when I'm on a straight, if you are doing auto cross or taking a track day on a circuit course (its soooo much fun in a celi), I'd shift around 5,500 rpm, and you'll be able to pick it up out of the corners
