is it possible to strengthen the gt engine so that it is safe to go above 6800
and if so, what needs to be changed

Yeah, after a while it will stop making power.

you could raise the rpm limit on a GT without the need to strengthen it without much more than an ECU replacement but the problem is that the GT engine isn't really designed for it. If the cams spin too fast there isn't enough time for the valves to open and get fresh air to the cylinder. Thats why a GTS has lift at 6000rpm- to increase the distance the valves travel down and alows more air in quickly. Not trying to down your idea but there are better ways to make power.

To answer your question directly, you might have to look into purchasing upgraded valve springs as valve float is the most common problem when increasing the redline.

And as the others said, to take advantage of the increased revs, you will have to considerably increase the volumetric efficiency at higher revs, I.E. cams.

it is possible, just get all new internals, im currently trying to get 7800, not really into it just yet, but thats what ill be working on!!
